The City of Edmonton is seeking an Urban Forester (Landscape Technician II) to serve as a key consultant and advocate for our municipal urban forest. City of Edmonton Urban Foresters on the Tree Care team are tasked to ensure that standards and regulations for tree care operations are followed ensuring safe and effective tree care practices
Key responsibilities include:
- Administering contracts for tree pruning tree removal maintenance and ground disturbance activities for Open Space and Boulevard trees
- Assessing tree care needs for Open Space and Boulevard trees and directing contractors accordingly
- Managing quality control for all tree care activities including performing inspections on in-house and contract pruning to ensure work meets specifications and assigning follow-up tasks as needed
- Ensuring all assigned and scheduled tree work is completed accurately and on time
- Coordinating and performing tree risk assessments and managing hazards
- Ensuring that Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHS) regulations are followed for tree care activities
- Ensure that environmental regulations are followed
- Staying current on innovations and research within the field of arboriculture
- Educating public and private business partners on the benefits of trees and the importance of preservation and maintenance
- Responding to 311 inquiries regarding City trees
- Assessing trees near utilities making recommendations and coordinating work with utility companies and contractors
- Evaluating trees for CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) root encroachments and tree girdling and assigning tree care treatments as needed
- Ensuring that procedures and policies are followed to maintain a safe working environment
- Collaborating with Urban Foresters Crew Leaders and Arborists to ensure an integrated approach to Urban Forestry
- Performing other related duties as required
- Minimum 2 year post secondary diploma in Forestry or a related field
- Minimum 5 years experience in Arboriculture or Urban Forestry
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist designation
Assets:
- Experience pruning trees in a municipal environment
- Experience with emergency storm damage response
- Project Management Certification
- Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
- Experience with contract or staff supervision
Skills required for success:
- Technical Expertise: Working knowledge of advanced arboriculture techniques tree physiology dendrology and plant health care
- Ability to recognize insect and disease infestations in trees
- Strong knowledge of ISA Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Understanding of the equipment required for arboriculture tasks
- Communication: Ability to deal effectively with the public and express complex technical decisions clearly both orally and in writing
- Project Management: Skill in organizing multiple contractors and City employees while maintaining focus on accurate high-quality and defendable work
- Problem-Solving: Ability to develop creative compromises for challenging construction sites to protect City assets
- Administrative Proficiency: Strong understanding of computer programs GIS and SAP for managing notifications and tracking accomplishments

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Must have own vehicle and business auto insurance
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
- Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
Work Environment:
- This role involves exposure to extreme temperatures precipitation and various environmental conditions such as dust or dry/humid air
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 20 lbs balancing pulling and use of feet for controls
- You will be required to work on construction sites and may occasionally work alone
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety footwear hard hats and eye protection is required

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week(Eligible for a scheduled Earned Day Off (EDO) every second or third week)
Salary Range: $41.177 - $51.444 (Hourly) $85977.58 - $107415.07 (Annually)
