Role:Assistant Professor & English Gym Coordinator (English for Academic Purposes)

Grade and Salary: Grade 7 37694 - 47389 per annum (pro-rata)

FTE and working pattern: 0.5FTE 17.5hrs per week

Contract: Fixed Term 11 Months

Holiday Entitlement: 33 days annual leaveplus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday) (pro-rata)

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the creation development and organisation of English language Study skills and English for Specific Academic Purposes materials and resources on Canvas and the English Gym site
  • Coordinate and deliver English Gym activities (workshops drop-ins tutorials) at the Scottish Borders Campus.
  • Coordinate staffing and timetabling of workshops and drop-in sessions for the English Gym across the university
  • Collaborate with academic staff and student support services to identify and respond to student needs.
  • Support the integration of English Gym services into academic programmes and university-wide initiatives.
  • Prepare students for a variety of formative and summative assessments related to their course of study
  • Show flexibility and creativity in their teaching to ensure that student needs are met and programme aims and outcomes are achieved
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in and awareness of the needs of international and home students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds
  • Maintain accurate records of work and attendance and attend programme and section meetings as required
  • Mark grade and provide feedback for any PSE on student work in a timely manner and to the agreed standard
  • Use engage with and fully exploit the Universitys virtual learning environment (CANVAS) and other learning and teaching tools as required
  • Maintain accurate records of student engagement and feedback.
  • Actively engage with continuous professional development
  • Deliver high-quality in-sessional support to Heriot-Watt students as needed
  • Participate in regular team meetings (online) with the wider English Gym team across campuses.
  • Promote the English Gym locally through outreach and engagement activities.

While the amount of contact time and other teaching-related activities may vary each week it is expected that tutors will typically work for a minimum of 17.5 hours per week.

Applicants should hold a good first degree and a recognised TEFL qualification (e.g. CELTA CertTrinity TESOL) as a minimum and have a minimum of two-years-experience of teaching university level students.

Experience of website development creation editing and publishing and delivering effective online pedagogies as well as teaching on EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes preferably in a UK university context is also essential.

Essential & Desirable Criteria

Essential criteria

  1. Educated to first degree level or equivalent
  2. Recognised TEFL qualification (e.g. CELTA Trinity Cert TESOL)
  3. Knowledge and experience of delivering effective online pedagogies
  4. Experience of teaching on ESAP and/or EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes
  5. Experience of widening participation in HE settings
  6. Experience of developing literacy in HE settings
  7. Competent in the use of relevant EduTech and IT packages
  8. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  9. Strong organisational and communication skills.

Desirable criteria

  1. Higher degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL related field and/or a DELTA
  2. Experience of website creation development editing and publishing
  3. TEAP qualification and/ormembership of relevantprofessional body (e.g. BALEAP)
  4. Experience of teaching on ESAP/EAP courses such as Foundation/International Pathway Programmes pre-sessional or in-sessional programmes in a UK context
  5. Familiarity with CANVAS or similar Virtual Learning Environment e.g. Moodle or Canvas
  6. Background in technical/science or business subject
  7. Familiarity with the needs of students in creative or technical disciplines (e.g. textiles design engineering).

About the Team

The Academic English team delivers high-quality pre-sessional academic English programmes in-sessional support Foundation Year pathway delivery and other language courses that support the Universitys international student recruitment strategy. These programmes play a crucial role in developing students language and study competence to enable them to perform well on their destination programmes.

The English Gym forms part of one of Heriot-Watt Universitys academic English and literacy support services empowering students across all campuses to thrive in their studies. Through dynamic workshops personalised 1-2-1 tutorials and flexible online resources the English Gym helps students build confidence and competence in academic communication.

This new part-time role will lead the delivery of English Gym activities at the Scottish Borders Campus (Galashiels)supporting both home and international students from all disciplines. Whether students are refining their academic writing preparing for presentations or navigating university-level reading and research the English Gym offers a welcoming inclusive space where learners can grow connect and succeed. During quieter periods at the borders campus you will be involved with developing materials and supporting with the Pre-sessional English programme

The English Gym provides English language and academic skills support across the university. You will work directly with the English Gym coordinator who will have overall responsibility for the creation and development of materials and resources as well as the coordination of in-person and online workshops and drop-in sessions for students. You should also expect to contribute to materials development where required and to supporting the adoption of new innovations within teaching programmes including online delivery of Pre-sessional English as appropriate.
