Job Summary

Are you interested in contributing to the next generation of superconducting technologies As a Designer of High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) systems you will contribute to the development of REBCO superconducting cables and magnets for advanced accelerator and energy applications. You will work on the design and realisation of HTS components and prototypes following them from concept through manufacturing and assembly within CERNs HTS R&D programmes.

Your responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and systems for HTS cables and magnets from conceptual studies to detailed manufacturing drawings using CATIA V5.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation including design reports technical specifications and calculation notes.
  • Verify manufacturing drawings for compliance with design standards and quality assurance requirements.
  • Follow up the manufacturing of mechanical parts liaising with workshops and suppliers.
  • Participate in the assembly of HTS prototypes and contribute to their mechanical integration.

Your profile

  • Experience in the design of mechanical systems and components.
  • Knowledge of mechanical properties of materials and manufacturing or fabrication technologies.
  • Experience producing 2D technical drawings in compliance with ISO dimensioning and tolerancing standards (ISO GPS).
  • Ability to analyse and solve basic mechanical engineering problems using strength-of-materials principles.
  • Experience preparing clear technical reports and engineering documentation.
  • Initial experience with precise mechanical assembly of components.

Skills

  • Proficiency with CAD software (preferably CATIA V5).
  • Familiarity with mechanical calculation and analysis tools.
  • Understanding of mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and international team.
  • Spoken and written English with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelors or Masters degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Job closing date: 02.02.2026 at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week
