Position Summary:

This opportunity is well-suited for individuals interested in pursuing a career in urban forestry or related fields particularly those who may require additional experience or knowledge to enter the job market. This extensive year-long program offers practical scientific training support in job preparation and opportunities to network within Baltimores environmental sector. You will leave with sought-after certifications and the expertise to enter the workforce above entry-level. This position is primarily field-based requiring work outdoors in various urban environments. Schedules may include early mornings occasional weekends and support for volunteer events. We seek curious and motivated individuals who are excited about working outdoors with their hands and interested in learning in a classroom setting. Team members will also participate in educational workshops job skills training and workforce development activities.

Responsibilities

Classroom Setting

- Sit and learn with hands-on and lecture-style teaching

- Engage in group work and complete projects

- Remain engaged and interested in learning opportunities

Field Work

- Manually plant and care for trees

- Prune trees in the winter

- Water trees in the summer

- Manually remove invasive species

- Learn the equipment and safety procedures

- Wear proper PPE at all times

- Maintain tree nursery

- Maintain tools and equipment

- Engage with volunteers during events

- Plant shrubs plugs and saplings on occasion

- Assist with community and Civic Works projects as needed

Organization and Program Description:

Civic Works strengthens Baltimores communities through education skills development and community service. The Community Canopy Program established by Civic Works aims to provide training for a local skilled workforce in urban forestry. The Community Canopy program focuses on engaging the community and promoting environmental stewardship to ensure its impact extends beyond its participants.

Member Service Activities & Benefits

During the Service Term members will serve primarily outdoors performing the following tasks and will receive the following benefits:

  • Hands-on training in how to plant and care for trees.
  • Soft skills development related to personal and professional growth from resume building and mock interviews to equity inclusion and project management/leadership.
  • Members will receive a living allowance in the form of a fixed bi-weekly stipend.

Upon completion of the Service Term members will receive the following benefits:

  • Eli Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (based on the following service term structure): 1700 hours - $7395.00

900 Hours - $3697.50

675 Hours - $2817.14

450 Hours - $1956.35

300 Hours - $1565.08

  • The member will receive continued support from Civic Works with the following soft skills:
  • Mentoring & Career Planning Support
  • Resume Building & Review
  • Job Coaching & Referrals


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to serve 32 hours/week (Monday Thursday and some weekends).
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Willingness to serve in difficult weather conditions (including extreme heat & cold). Agreement to submit to a criminal history check and a National Sex Offender Registry search.
  • Commitment to a drug-free workplace.
  • Team Player and a willingness to try and learn new things.

Desired (but not needed):

  • A drivers license.
  • Knowledge of basic outdoor work.
  • Experience serving in low-income communities.
  • Strong communication skills
