Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of this position is to teach four sections of History including any possible combination of 11th grade Honors US History (yearlong course) 9th grade world history (one semester) and/or 9th grade ethnic studies (one semester). After the first year this position would also develop or adapt one-semester elective courses in world history for seniors. Additional responsibilities may include mentoring a designated group of students.

Requirements

Specific Responsibilities:

Develops curriculum for and teaches Honors US History classes for 11th-grade students 9th grade world history students and possibly 9th grade ethnic studies students.

Collaborates with other History teachers to maintain alignment of course competencies content pacing and assessment

Collaborates with History Department members to continue developing the program and maintain vertical alignment with world history and senior electives around historical thinking reading writing speaking and research skills

Hosts weekly drop-in office hours for students and makes availability to meet with students 1:1

Attends weekly team faculty department and all-school meetings

Teaches and/or has flexibility to create an elective course dealing with world history at an appropriate rigor and depth for 12th grade students

Vigorously engages in their own professional development

Actively participates in the full life of the school which can include but is not limited to: serving on an academic governance committee mentoring admissions events sponsoring affinity groups coaching sponsoring co-curricular clubs and/or involvement with our Breakthrough SummerBridge program

Serves as a mentor to a group of 10-14 students from 9th through 12th grade and sits on a grade-level team

Establishes community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all of the schools constituencies

Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the schools documents

Since safety and security are everyones responsibility takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students faculty staff equipment materials and facilities

Performs other duties as assigned


Education & Experience:

Bachelors degree or higher in History from a four-year college or university OR a degree in a related field with significant course work in History is required

Coursework experience or professional development in curriculum design and instruction for high school students OR an education degree is preferred


Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Competence and mastery in History content area

Pedagogy specific to the developmental needs of high school-aged students

Ability to craft and maintain equally rigorous and engaging classroom experiences

An understanding of and commitment to the schools mission including a commitment to student-centered education and inclusive classroom practices

Demonstrates a growth mindset and openness to feedback

Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the students and program

Ability to create an active learning environment

Demonstrates knowledge and skill to work with students families administrators and colleagues from diverse backgrounds

Demonstrates knowledge and skill in differentiating lessons to appeal to a variety of learning styles needs and accommodations

Has experience developing an equity-focused teaching practice that demonstrates cultural competency

Demonstrates skills to give appropriate formative feedback and summative assessments

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all constituents in the school community

Ability to use Google Suite Microsoft Office Suite learning management systems (i.e. Canvas) and operate AV technology and laboratory equipment in the classroom

Openness to working in closely collaborative office environment with colleagues

Salary is based on a scale that is tied to years of relevant experience. Current full-time instructor salaries run from $83995-$162757.
