Rockhurst University Department of Safety and Security is a growing and progressive agency that is seeking a full-time Sergeant in the Uniformed Patrol Division. Rockhurst University is a Catholic Jesuit University serving 3000 students in the business and cultural center of Kansas City Missouri. Rockhurst University is a comprehensive University offering more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs taught by nationally recognized faculty. Rockhurst University employs approximately 500 faculty and staff.

Rockhurst Department of Safety and Security Sergeants carry a Class A Private Officers License and are classified as Patrol Agents under Title 17 and Chapter 84 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri. This is defined as an armed uniformed officer with the ability to arrest detain deter or prevent crime by implementing various law enforcement methods.

Job Responsibilities:

Provide law enforcement and public safety to the community to include the protection of life and property enforcement of laws and ordinances traffic enforcement crime prevention patrol activity accident investigation resolution of domestic and other disturbances and prosecution support. All assignments require tactful and respectful treatment of the public conscientious and efficient performance of duties. This is a supervisory position responsible for supervising the patrol of a specified area as well as performing security officer duties for the purpose of maintaining law and order and protecting life property and Rockhurst University policies. Supervises coaches and counsels direct reports toward the maximum performance of assigned duties and departmental objectives.

Work is reviewed by the Chief of Security through observation inspection and through both oral and written reports.

Qualifications:

To successfully perform the essential functions of this position the incumbent must have seven to ten years experience as a supervisor in law enforcement or public safety environment 120 hours of accredited college coursework or Bachelors degree equivalent years of related experience and education combined with supervisory responsibility of at least a department or multiple direct reports in a multicultural environment and a high school diploma or GED Certificate. Additional knowledge and skill requirements include the following:

  • Ability to lead subordinates on a given shift or assignment and to assign instruct and review their work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to deal courteously and firmly with the public and to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to observe situations analytically impartially and objectively and to record them clearly and completely; must use sound logic and independent judgment to react quickly and appropriately in dangerous and emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate firearms as specified by the departments firearm certification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of laws state statutes municipal ordinances and departmental policies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of situations using verbal auditory visual and writing skills. Requires the ability to project vocally to maintain order at disturbances accidents crime scenes or over other background noises as needed.
  • Ability to write clear concise and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to meet the minimum physical requirements related to police activities as specified by departmental standards; must be physically able to respond at all levels of the departments level of force options.
  • Knowledge of appropriate first aid principles and skill in their application.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written orders.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Minimum age 21
  • US Citizen
  • No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors
  • Possess a valid drivers license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Missouri and have the ability to operate department vehicles safely within specific vehicle operating procedures and department standards.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record and will have their driving records checked annually.
  • Must also participate in and pass a defensive driving course.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Class E drivers license if they have a Missouri drivers license.
  • Operate a firearm as specified by the departments firearm certification requirements.
  • Must successfully pass a medical examination a background investigation drug test and an interview board as set forth by University and Department policy.
  • Must be able to qualify for an armed private officers license through the Kansas City Missouri Police Department both upon initial hiring and annually thereafter.
  • Must have excellent communication and customer service skills and ability to apply the philosophy of Community-Oriented Policing successfully.
  • Basic computer keyboard skills are essential Microsoft Word and Excel strongly preferred.
