About this unit:
The MCS/ECMO department (Mechanical Circulatory Support) is a small department comprised of approximately 30 RN & RT staff. Our staff comes with a variety of experience from the neonatal pediatric and (adult) cardiothoracic intensive care units. Team members are responsible for maintaining heart and lung support devices on the most critically ill patients. We support pre- and post-transplant (both heart & lung) patients as well as post-cardiac arrest pulmonary illness (COVID influenza RSV) and congenital heart defect patients.
We currently have 27 full- and part-time staff in our department. When bringing new staff onto the team we typically hold week-long classroom sessions which include introductions to ECMO equipment physiology of ECMO and hands-on water drills to improve confidence and competency with the devices.
Scope of Work
Applies scientific knowledge / specialized training to practical clinical problems related to all mechanical circulatory support devices. Provides continuous monitoring and troubleshooting with continuous bedside presence. Performs a wide range of duties to maintain equipment and provide uninterrupted support to the patient. Provides the aforementioned service to the adult pediatric and neonatal areas.
Qualifications
- Required Associates Degree health care or related field
- Preferred Bachelors Degree
- 2 years of relevant experience working in neonatal pediatric or adult critical care Required
- 6 months of relevant experience previous experience in mechanical support devices Preferred
- completion of extracorporeal mechanical oxgenation (ECMO) training program. Training will be provided. Required
- CRT-Respiratory Therapist Registry - NBRC National Board for Respiratory Care Upon Hire required Or
- LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATEMI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required Or
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
Preferred qualifications:
- CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire preferred
- CRT-Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire preferred
