DescriptionThe Director of Career Development provides dynamic and innovative leadership for the Oglethorpe University Center for Career Development. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs the Director of the Center for Career Development is responsible for envisioning an inspirational timely and holistic approach to career readiness that links practical skill development such as resume writing and interviewing to career exploration and preparation through internships and experiential learning opportunities. The Director identifies opportunities for creative engagement with Oglethorpes distinguished academic programs and alumni to craft successful pathways for its diverse and dynamic student particular the Director develops strategies to leverage Oglethorpes location in Atlanta which offers students unique opportunities to sample careers explore areas of interest build resumes and develop professional networks that they will rely on throughout their career. The Director is responsible for developing directing and implementing the components and initiatives of the Center of Career Development such as: career advising and counseling career exploration job search strategies internships data collection employer outreach programs and supporting student success from the first-year through graduation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Career Development
- Establish strategic vision annual goals objectives and benchmarks for the Center for Career Development.
- Implement strategies to provide inclusive programming responsive the full diversity of Oglethorpe students.
- Develop innovative strategies for continued program development and improvement.
- Oversee career programming and career counseling including individual and group learning opportunities
- Manage career readiness course design and delivery facilitating courses as needed.
- Fully implement Career Pathways initiative.
- Direct the collection maintenance and reporting of relevant data. Maintain accurate data on student use of services experiential learning and job placements.
- Oversee the career development budget and supervise the Career Development staff including student workers.
- Collaborate with other campus units including academic affairs and alumni affairs to design and implement career-related services and programs including academic departments alumni relations the MBA program and campus life.
- Provide campus-wide leadership to help all student-facing areas of the college participate in career readiness education.
- Partner with Advancement to acquire resources to support career development opportunities.
- Direct the centers communication strategies to provide accurate and up-to-date information about services to various constituencies including students faculty employers alumni and parents.
- Oversee major career-related events on campus including the Career Fair and represent the Center for Career Development at University events.
- Develop and sustain an innovative internship program designed to assist Oglethorpe students in applying for and obtaining high quality career readiness experiences.
- Advise students in the internship for credit process and serve as the liaison with faculty and the Registrar
- Develop and maintain employer and alumni relationships to promote creation of student opportunities.
- Manage and grow employer participation in career fairs/special events and employer recruitment services (which include on-line job listing and resume referral services and on-campus presentations.
Other Duties
- Serve on the Student Affairs leadership team and provide sustained leadership on divisional priorities such as retention persistence and student satisfaction.
- Attends and provide leadership in divisional meetings and professional development opportunities for all staff.
- Participate in major Student Affairs and University events such as Orientation and Commencement.
- Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsQualifications Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Masters degree in Counseling Psychology Education Higher Education Administration Student Personnel or related field and/or experience in Human Resources Training and Development or related field is preferred.
- Five or more years of experience in the field of career development or student affairs in a college or university setting
- A proven track record of success developing and implementing initiatives leading staff and creating meaningful relationships with multiple constituencies
- Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills including a collaborative and team-oriented work style
- Ability to work effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds
- Experience developing positive relationships and partnerships
- Demonstrated proficiency designing and delivering presentations
- Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint
- Demonstrated proficiency in using career assessment instruments
- Working knowledge of career services management software
- Ability to work at evening and weekend events as needed
Work Environment:
Normal use of office equipment sitting at a desk walking or standing occasional lifting (<25 lbs).
This position is full-time in person. Occasional remote work may be possible by request to a supervisor only if and when business operations permit.
