DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC: The Claflin University Department of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The department is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As a degree-granting department we offer two major programs of study: BA in Music Education and BA in Music and a jazz studies concentration.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This candidate would have the rank of Assistant Professor of Music Education This person will serve as coordinator of the Music Education degree program. This position entails coordinating the Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree program and assuming a senior leadership role in music education within the school. Responsibilities include teaching courses in music education music methods coordinating student internships supervising student teachers monitoring state certification requirements and serving as a liaison for accreditation procedures with the school of education and relevant agencies. The successful candidate will also participate in the development of a proposal for a new Three Summers Master of Music Education degree and may teach in a secondary area based on expertise and departmental needs. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in music education and present a record of scholarly and/or administrative achievement with a demonstrated capacity to continue research and creative activity at Claflin University.
A graduate degree in Music History/Ethnomusicology or related field is required. A competed doctorate is required for a tenure track appointment and the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD will be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to continue a research agenda and participate in service activities. Administrative experience and or knowledge about AI or modern technologies in music. The successful candidate will have: 1) a demonstrated record of excellence of teaching in higher education; 2) a demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in education and music; 3) a strong knowledge and command of current technology with skills to teach in multiple learning modalities.Doctorate in Music Education or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation; completed by start of appointment. Three or more years of successful K-12 teaching.Demonstrated experience in higher education teaching general music education courses. ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 1 2026. If successful candidate is ABD rank will be made at a Lecturer level.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three or more years of successful college/university teaching.
Experience with state certification and accreditation requirements.
Certification and/or proficiency in approaches to general music such as Orff Kodaly Dalcroze etc. Demonstrated resourcefulness in student recruitment
Knowledge of education methods & materials and state certification requirements.
Knowledge of major concepts assumptions debates processes of inquiry and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).
Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals to include the use of AI.
Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.
Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face synchronous online or asynchronous online).
Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning.
Ability to communicate effectively demonstrate leadership and apply strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to foster student independence in musicianship teaching and educational leadership.
Ability to contribute through research teaching and/or public engagement to the excellence of Claflin University
