Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions
Review operations and work performed in the section; identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary to ensure accurate timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
- Assists in directing the daily workflow assigned to the specific technical work section.
- In the absence of the section leader responsible for the operation of the laboratory section.
- When appropriate consults with the Medical Director(s) section leader or designee regarding technical issues.
- Assists in continued instrument and/or testing method troubleshooting of tests as needed.
- Performs review of pertinent information and initiates immediate follow-up as appropriate. Reports issues and problems to section leader.
- Reviews patient testing results.
- Ensures any associated quality control issues are resolved.
- Develops and maintains scientific and technical expertise in the laboratory.
Develop implement and document orientation training and education to ensure employee competence provide excellent services and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.
- Assists in training new and existing staff including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill/training checklists.
- Organizational and departmental competencies are completed 100% of the time.
- Communicates process/procedural changes in a timely manner and educates staff on the need for the change.
- Identifies staff performance issues. Initiates immediate follow-up as required. Provides documentation of issues to section leader.
Prepare for and participate in inspections proficiency testing Quality Assurance activities properly maintain records prepare and update section policies and procedures to fulfill the requirements of the accrediting agencies (i.e. CAP Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) by following the provided protocol.
- Completes CAP checklist responses in preparation for on-site or self-inspection.
- Respond to correct all section deficiencies within the deadline by the specified timeline.
- Procedure manuals are reviewed/revised at least every two years.
- Distributes Proficiency Tests to staff. Reviews and submits Proficiency Tests results.
- Assists section leader with problem resolution and follow up reports for proficiency tests as requested.
- Assists with the completion of Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities.
Perform duties of a technologist to assist in daily workload by performing assigned tasks.
- Assists in daily workload.
- Quality control is completed and documented 100% of the time.
- Calibration completed and documented 100% of the time.
- Routine maintenance completed and documented 100% of the time.
- Achieves section/organization quality goals.
- Compliant per Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines 100% of the time.

Job Requirements
Education
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree required in Medical Laboratory Science or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a Certificate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)/Medical Technology (MT)/Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program.
Experience
- Minimum of three years Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)/Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) experience working in health care laboratory environment required.
License/Certifications
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) registration is required.
- Medical Technologist () certification required.
- Specialty Certification is preferred.
- Some personnel in this position require successful screening to access secured data and systems governed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Successful completion of this screening is required to assume this position. If the job code requires access failure to complete the applicable access level screening results in the candidate becoming ineligible for the job.
