Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree with a minimum of three years nursing experience working in pediatrics or school nursing preferred

Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas

Current BLS Healthcare Provider CPR certification

Certification in vision hearing scoliosis and acanthosis screening preferred but training is provided

Ability to provide training and presentations in front of large audiences

Strong interdepartmental teamwork process skills to meet the needs of campus staff students and parents.

Strong organizational communication and intervention skills

Strong writing skills

Provide own transportation

Primary Purpose:

Function as a health care provider that meets the Standards of Care for nursing designated by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners in the school the absence of a Campus Nurse implement a comprehensive program of health services for the campus that support both students and staff. Implement and maintain a comprehensive healthcare program that advocates for the health rights of children and promotes an optimal level of wellness for the students staff and community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide campus support for healthcare services assigned by the Director of Health Services.
  2. Identifies plans intervenes and evaluates student health concerns including physical and mental health needs and injuries. Maintains evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.
  3. Possesses strong communication and intervention skills.
  4. Possesses strong physical assessment skills with the ability to evaluate health and safety measures in the school environment.
  5. Provides health assessments including screenings for health factors impacting student education. This includes mandated screenings such as vision hearing scoliosis and acanthosis.
  6. Provides chronic disease management and education including training and supervising designated school personnel to perform specialized procedures which serve the needs of children with disabilities and/or health conditions in the school setting.
  7. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs early intervention surveillance reporting and follow-up of contagious diseases.
  8. Directly and indirectly provides health education health resources and curriculum recommendations. Participates as the health specialist on school teams and promotes a healthy school environment conducive to learning.
  9. Assist with initiating student Individual Healthcare Plans and collaborate with campuses staff and parents to establish a plan that promotes student learning in the school setting.
  10. Participates as a health specialist to promote a healthy school environment conducive to learning.
  11. Assist with delivery of healthcare and facilitate referrals to appropriate medical resources for students and staff.
  12. Demonstrate nursing professionalism by presenting healthcare information as deemed necessary for campus required meetings.
  13. Knowledge of applicable laws codes regulations and policies related to school health services.
  14. Knowledge of child development developmental disabilities assessment and family intervention.
  15. Utilizes equipment and technology for the delivery of health care services.
  16. RN will be responsible for the direct supervision of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) if an LVN is assigned to their campus.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Thermometer blood pressure cuff audiometer otoscope sphygmomanometer vision screening equipment thermoscan basic clinic equipment equipment used with medically fragile students personal computer scanner copier and all other appropriate office equipment.

Working Conditions:

Responsibilities require contact with sick and/or injured person(s) which may include exposure to bodily fluids disruptive behavior and communicable disease. There may be exposure to potentially hazardous medical equipment and/or chemicals. Mental demands require emotional control under stress. Physical demands/environment factors may require standing for long periods of time frequent stooping bending pulling and pushing. Moderate lifting district-wide travel.
