Advanced Energy United seeks a proactive and detail-oriented Policy and Advocacy Intern to join ourExpanding Wholesale Marketsteam for the Summer2026program.The ideal candidate would beajunior/seniorcollegestudentor graduate studentwith an engineering legalpolicyoreconomicsbackground.This rolewill helpsupport Uniteds missionof achieving 100% clean energyand workto shape a clean energy futurethrough engagementinthe Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)and Southwest Power Pool (SPP)stakeholder processes.Potential topics includetransmission interconnectiondistributed energy resources large load growthorotherwholesale marketreforms. The internship willculminatein a final projectpresented to theentireorganization.

Therole may include attending relevant stakeholder meetings(virtually)to track market developments and processes.Itwill focus on changing the rules governing how existing wholesale electricity marketsoperateto expand opportunities in support ofthe growth of clean energy resources and the retirement of aging incumbent technologies.The intern may be responsible for research and reporting as well aspreparation ofadvocacy materials (comments presentations letters fact sheets etc.).The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with interest and experience in policy and politics wholesale energy markets clean energy and climate. Candidates should be creative and flexible able to explain complex topics clearly andhave the ability toprioritize and move between projects as needed to support Uniteds work in a wide variety of areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical/PolicyResearch & Analysis:Track and analyzepolicy developmentsin MISO and SPP; prepare summariesandpolicy memoson key issues raised at stakeholder meetings; conduct research andidentifybest practices in transmissioninterconnectiondistributed energy resources resourceaccreditationand load growth processes.
  • MISO & SPP Stakeholder Participation & Comment Development:Monitor and summarize relevant MISO and SPP stakeholder meetings;assistin drafting comments and developing policy positions; research technical issues related to energy markets; monitor news and developments in the Midwest that affect transmission interconnection and wholesale electricity markets.
  • Communications:Draft talking points letter summary memos and fact sheets for a variety of audiences.

Final Project:Interns will complete an independent research project on aMISO/SPPenergy policy topic of mutual interest (examples: comparative analysis ofdemand response/distributed energy resource reforms at MISO and SPP;stakeholderpowermappingand research). The project will be presented to the organization at the end of the program

Interns willworkahybridscheduleand thereforemustbelocated inthe DC MD VA area for the summer a commutable distance to our DC office.A final project will be due from each intern and presented to the organizationat the end of the program.
