This Position reports to:
Electrical Systems Department ManagerAs an intern you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through various projects. Each day you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your skills by supporting ABBs operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.
The work model for the role is onsite/hybrid in Raleigh NC.
You will be mainly accountable for:
Conduct literature survey and benchmarking to assess the state of art methods for a given problem
Actively participate in applied research activities in the area of power system modeling and simulation distributed energy resources distribution protection and control resulting in proofs of concept prototypes patents and/or academic publications
Contribute to the promotion of the application of active network management within ABBs customer industries and developing prototype solutions using hardware-in-loop testing environment such as Opal-RT
Familiarity with load flow analysis power system optimization and active network management topics
Modeling and simulation of distribution grids via software such as MATLAB/Simulink and PSCAD/RSCAD
Contribute to intelligent active network management systems that use the latest software technologies including edge computing embedded systems communications IoT technologies machine learning artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies

Qualifications for the role:
Currently enrolled in a degree program in the US
Must be currently authorized to work for ABB in the US
PhD or masters student in Electrical Engineering (PhD preferred)
Knowledge of distribution system apparatus and operations is a big plus
Knowledge of different types of power electronics converters and converter control
Knowledge of power system fault protection
Modeling and simulation expertise in MATLAB/Simulink and Opal-RT
Modeling and simulation expertise in PSCAD/RSCAD and RTDS
Modeling and simulation expertise in EnergyPlus and OpenDSS
Knowledge and experience with active distribution system modeling systems
Knowledge of Python C C# JavaScript or other object-oriented programming languages and concepts for data processing and analytics
Knowledge of industry communications protocols and technologies such as DNP3 Modbus IEC61850 OPC UA OCPP MQTT WebSocket BACnet and other grid and related system protocols
Willingness to quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of new technologies and application domains
