When decision-makers need informationfrom policymakers to humanitarian aid organizations to military leaders on the groundtime and time again they turn to the Institute for the Study of War.


ISW has a unique dual mission:to provide real-time intelligenceto help leaders make informed decisions in conflict zones around the world andeducate the next generationof national security leaders. This work is carried out through the General Jack Keane Center for National Security and the General David H. Petraeus Center for Emerging Leaders.


Position Summary:

Reporting to theDirector of Developmentof the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and serving as an integral member of the ISW team the Major GiftsOfficer (MGO) will initiate manage nurture and enhance relationships with a portfolio of 75-100 philanthropic prospects capable of making gifts of $25000 or more from individuals foundations and corporations. As apredominantly prospect-facingmember of the ISW team the MGO will be charged with ensuring effective identification qualification cultivation solicitation and stewardship of prospects as well asacquiringnew major gift donors and improving the probability of continued and increased support among existing donors. The MGO will serve as an organizational ambassador and will provide opportunities to match donors interests with organizational priorities.


Job Duties andResponsibilities:

  • Managing a portfolio of 75-100 major gift donors funders and prospects and leading the process of prospect identification qualification cultivation solicitation and stewardship to ensure that ISWs fundraising goals aremet.
  • Completing150 donor visits each year(including in-person phone calls and substantive high-touch email exchanges) making 30 solicitationsannually.
  • Engaging regularly with each qualified major gift prospect emphasizing one-to-one interaction either in person or virtually depending upon each donors uniquepreferences.
  • Working in conjunction with theDirector of Development other members of the Development Teamand ISW staff to curate individual tailored prospect engagement strategies in alignment with key ISWinitiatives.
  • Preparing written strategies to cultivaterelationshipswill lead to solicitation and stewardship of majorgifts.
  • Developing a tiered prospect management system tofacilitatethe movement ofprospectsthrough the various stages of the gift cycle based on the moves managementmodel.
  • Participating in regular prospect management meetings andconsistentlystrategizing withtheDirector of Development the President board members and fellow ISW staffmembers.
  • EngagingadditionalISW representatives including theDirector of Development the PresidentDirector of Accountingandother keystakeholdersas natural partners in cultivation and solicitation whenappropriate.
  • Ensuringtimelyandappropriate acknowledgementof majorgifts.
  • Understanding ISWs various funding needs as well as the various giftvehiclesdonors may choose to supportthem.
  • Committing to work toward performance benchmarks set in collaboration withISW leadershipand based upon industry standard best practices for prospect engagement and philanthropicrevenue.
  • Conducting prospect researchtostrengthen the prospect pipeline and undertaking regular portfolio review in collaboration with theDirector of Development.
  • Providing feedback regarding fundraising initiatives and programs based on professional knowledge as well as insights gleaned from donors andprospects.
  • Fillingtimelyreports documenting prospect interactions to ensure seamless movesmanagement.
  • Attending key ISW events to interact with donors funders andprospects.
  • Advocating for ISW and serving as an ambassador for its mission and valueproposition.
  • Adhering to fundraising best practices and following all organizational policies and processes.
  • Undertaking othertasksassigned.


Required education and experience:

  • Bachelorsdegree.
  • Fiveor moreyears of proven major gift fundraising experience and a working knowledge of gift vehicles including planned gift vehicles isessential.
  • Excellent communication organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding ofmajor gift fundraising techniques including moves management cultivation and stewardship techniques.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising CRMs WordExceland PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative work independently solve problems handle confidential information and navigate sensitivesituations.
  • Availability to travel as domestic and international.
  • Proven experience working with and managing volunteerspreferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of ateam.
  • A clear understanding of ISWs mission vision and value proposition.
