Job Summary

Join the Department of Military Affairs as a Range Maintenance Technician!

This position serves as the range maintenance and target repair specialist for the state Department of Military Affairs. The position also plans prioritizes and completes maintenance and the operation of targets and target support systems utilizing electronic and mechanical knowledge as well as making decisions that pertain to the MT Army National Guard Training Sites. Follows established safety protocols and SOPs for all units involved in live fire events and training through monitoring of surface danger zones fire mitigation/prevention unexploded ordnance hazards and first line responder activities. Performs diagnostics maintenance and repair of equipment and firefighting apparatus used routinely for range maintenance operations. Serves as initial attack crew for wildland fires on MT Army National Guard training facilities. This position performs a variety of other duties as assigned by the Range Maintenance Supervisor to include: providing range support during on-call and/or off duty hours; coordinating special projects; participating in ongoing training safety and educational programs; and performing a variety of administrative duties as assigned. This position reports to the state Department of Military Affairs Range Maintenance Supervisor.

The travel involved for this position is primarily between Fort Harrison and Limestone Hills a training range located near Townsend MT.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have knowledge of welding processes carpentry skills and skilled in electronics and electrical repair.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles to include 2-speed and air brake equipped vehicles be able to operate various heavy equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with State and Federal employees and the public.
  • Understands OSHA and state safety requirements receives appropriate training to operate equipment and performs all work in a safe manner.
  • Requires knowledge of herbicide and pesticide use and application.
  • Requires skill in use of computers and desktop software; reading and interpreting plans and sketches; interpreting manufacturers instructions and schematics; and the ability to look up items from a code book technical instructions or manufacturer data and interpret them.
  • Ability to learn and apply agency policy and procedures follow written and verbal instructions and perform work safely and efficiently.
  • Maintains regular communication with supervisor resolves problems beginning at the lowest level and brings to supervisors attention when necessary.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Wildland Red Card. This involves 3 days of classroom training one field day and culminates with a 3 mile 45-pound pack test which must be completed in 45 minutes or less.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and engage in diverse working environments within and outside the Department.

Qualifications - External

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): Two years work experience in welding carpentry and/or the electronics and electrical repair fields. Must have the ability to secure a CDL during the first 18 months of employment. A security clearance is required. Prior military experience is preferred.

A Training Assignment may be considered.

Conditions of employment:Must pass a pre-employment drug test driving record check and security clearance background check. Must have a good driving record.
