Job Title: Custodial Technician

Purpose: The Custodial Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness safety and operational functionality of the Brattleboro Food Co-op. This position requires a dependable detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment. As the Custodial Technician you will ensure a safe and welcoming space for customers staff and visitors while supporting the overall upkeep of the facility.

Status: Reports to Maintenance and Facilities Manager

Safety:

• Handles hazardous equipment carefully
• Aware of the presence of others when using such equipment
• Uses proper lifting procedures
• Wears appropriate PPE as needed
• Mindful of potential hazards to customers and other employees and takes actions to correct hazards
• Responds to and ensures proper clean-up of bloodborne pathogens and other bodily fluid spills and clean-up. See BBP Exposure Plan for further direction

Teamwork:

• Assist Facilities staff with projects and collaborate with other departments to ensure efficiency.
• Communicate effectively to support teamwork and prioritize tasks department-wide.
• Maintain professionalism by adhering to the work schedule taking breaks appropriately and demonstrating reliability.
• Works with other departments for efficiency. Ensures department teamwork through respect trust and communication.
• Looks at the whole department when prioritizing tasks and completes tasks in a timely fashion.

Accountability:

• Take ownership of tasks and exemplify honesty integrity and strong work ethics.
• Carry a radio or phone at all times during shifts to ensure effective communication.
• Report needs or issues promptly to the appropriate parties.
• Demonstrates dependability by adhering to the assigned work schedule

Key Responsibilities:

Custodial

• Clean and sanitize all areas of the facility including floors counters and restrooms.
• Empty trash and recycling bins and ensure proper disposal.
• Restock supplies such as paper towels and toilet paper.
• Dust polish sweep and mop to maintain a pristine appearance.
• Sanitize equipment and appliances to meet health and safety standards.

Maintenance Support

• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on HVAC plumbing and other systems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve equipment malfunctions.
• Conduct preventative maintenance to ensure systems run smoothly.
• Perform basic carpentry painting and other general upkeep tasks.
• Respond to emergency maintenance requests promptly and efficiently.

Security Responsibilities

• Conduct regular building security checks and address any issues.
• Report suspicious activity or security breaches to appropriate personnel.
• Respond to alarms and emergencies in a timely manner to ensure safety.
• The employee will be responsible for setting the building alarm and ensuring it is activated at the end of their shift. They may be the last person to leave the building ensuring all security protocols are followed.

Experience: Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred.

Knowledge: Basic understanding of plumbing electrical and HVAC systems.

Skills: Proficiency with hand and power tools such as drills saws and measuring instruments.

Attributes: Strong attention to detail organizational skills and the ability to work independently or collaboratively.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and up to 80 lbs. as needed.
