The University of Miami Health System at Doral has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Surgical Assistant with a hire date of June 2024.
The University of Miami Health System will soon open the second phase to our state-of-the-art facility in Downtown Doral that serves as a western hub for our distinguished regional network of ambulatory services. This 160000 square foot expansion will continue to bring world-class academic medicine cutting-edge technology and innovative treatment options to the rapidly growing Doral community. UHealth at Doral will have services through the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Desai Sethi Urology Institute as well as specialties such as cardiology endocrinology otolaryngology gastroenterology dermatology and more. The expansion will provide residents with innovative specialized medical services in the heart of their community. Once complete UHealth at Doral will have 8 operating rooms 3 endoscopy procedure rooms 33 cancer treatment bays over 60 multidisciplinary exam rooms and supporting ancillary services like imaging lab and respiratory therapy. UHealth at Doral will open in September 2024.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures. More specifically an employee in this position provides aid in exposure hemostasis closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the addition the Surgical Assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Maintains established University and hospital directives and safety environmental and infection control standards.
2. Preserves current knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
3. Maintains hemostasis by direct pressure use and application of appropriate surgical instruments placement of ties and suture ligatures application of chemical hemostatic agents or other necessary measures.
4. Assists with retracting tissues and performs wound closure.
5. Prepares surgical site and drapes and positions patient to obtain the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
6. Provides visualization of the operative sight by placing and securing retractors packing with sponges manipulating tissue suctioning irrigating and manipulating suture materials.
7. Facilitates volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques.
8. Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.
9. Ensures that drainage systems are appropriately secured to tissue.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduate from an accredited program four-year degree in related field or medical school graduate (foreign or domestic)
Certification and Licensing:
Certification in relevant specialty or field
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
