About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction purchasing and contracting for goods and services maintaining facilities managing state vehicles acquiring and disposing of real property and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally the department manages many of the states advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the states population that have been traditionally underserved.

Job Duties: The intern will learn how to engage youth in community science. The intern will assist with data collection at pollination stations at the Zoo and in the community. The intern will work closely with the conservation education science and horticulture sections of the Zoo to learn best practices for care and maintenance of the pollination stations learning pollinator identification skills and the role pollinators play in human health. The intern will design and facilitate a middle school lesson plan on the role of community science in our communities health and wellbeing. The intern will work closely with community partners to present at least 2 field days for after school groups over the summer. The intern will collect and compare data from the pollination stations. The intern will present these findings at a Zoo staff conservation lunch and learn where staff will be trained in how to collect pollinator data.

Major Task to be Performed:

Assist Regional Conservation Coordinator with pollinator observations following the protocols of the GreatSoutheast Pollinator Census and the SE Bumblebee Atlas. The observations will take place both at the Zoo andat pollination stations located throughout the community (transportation will be provided no overnight travelrequired.) Learn what plants are in the pollination stations. Identify and remove any weeds and water as neededthe pollination stations in the community. Engage with the community as they ask questions about the pollinationstations. Explain the vital role of community science in helping our communities thrive. Work with communitypartners to design and present at least 2 middle school field days at the Zoo where the students participate in
community science. Analyze data collected at the pollination stations compare results from rural and urbansites. Report findings and engage Zoo staff in community science at a lunch and learn in July at our outdoorpicnic area located next to a pollination station. Computers and any other tools needed will be supplied.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: A presentation of the data collected at our various pollination stations 2 middle school after school group field days using the community science lesson plan that the intern creates and one NC Zoo staff lunch and learn about the role of community science.

2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday May 18 Friday July 24 2026

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Willingness to work outside in most weather conditions including hot humid NC summer to working near insects including ones that can sting such as bees hornets to communicate clearly with adults youth and children. Experience working with a team such as sports summer camps tutoring after school students observation skills be able to focus on one plant for 15 minutes counting how many and which typepollinator visits. Legible record keeping. Understanding of middle school science experience collecting data preferred. Valid drivers license also preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college university law school community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1 2026.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.

This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
