This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.

This part-time temporary position is located in Rocky Mount - Nash County.

This part-time temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Transportation - DMV. The Medical Review BoardOphthalmologist willserve in a mission critical position. The Medical Review Unit is the arm of Customer Compliance Services that is responsible for gathering and evaluating medical data of licensed drivers or applicants for driver licenses in the State of North Carolina who are currently suffering from a medical condition that could negatively impact their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. There are currently over 170000 citizens in the Medical Review Program that require follow-up at varying intervals. Over 21000 reviews are conducted each year and the Medical Review Board conducts approximately 600 in-person hearings each year. The employees in the Medical Review Unit perform a variety of duties. Those citizens whose driving privilege is restricted or cancelled have a legal right per NCGS 20-9 to appeal the Units decision by requesting a hearing before a board comprising of licensed medical professionals.
Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.
