Under general supervision the 7524 Institution Utility Worker is an entry level position that performs a variety of manual and general labor tasks in connection with the operation and maintenance of institutional buildings and grounds and performs other related duties as required.
Essential Tasks & Duties
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109 the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job class and are not intended to be an inclusive list; may include additional duties as assigned.
- Cleans and removes debris around buildings and grounds; consolidates and loads refuse onto trucks for transport to disposal site or into dumpsters for removal. Makes contact with appropriate vendors such as recycling garbage and non-profit agencies for recycle reuse or refurbish.
- Operates a motor vehicle while transporting a variety of items which include money refuse donations equipment furniture food medical related items and interdepartmental forms of communication. This includes items for pick-up and/or delivery. May operate a motor vehicle in the transfer of employees and/or patients.
- Performs minor repairs on plumbing and kitchen equipment such as garbage disposals and grills; performs minor automotive repair and minor carpentry; and may complete other minor repair tasks such as installation of work cubicles and hardware.
- Performs general maintenance and labor tasks within the buildings including emergency cleaning and replacing light bulbs.
- Assists the engineering staff and/or electricians in the performance of their duties which may include the HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system.
- Assists others in daily tasks.
- Assists in building inspections by participating in the walk through to identify health and safety issues.
- Assists in setting up or rearranging meeting rooms and the reconfiguration of work areas.
Qualifications :
- Current Category 16 17 or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 7524 who has worked at least 2080 hours in Class 7524; AND
- Six (6) months experience in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; AND
- Possession of a valid Class C driver license
Special Requirements:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: the ability to drive to various work related sites; to work occasionally on weekends and nights; and may involve some dirty and disagreeable work conditions such as tight crawl spaces with hot steam pipes. Employees will be required to lift 50 - 70 pounds depending upon the position.
Note - A current copy of the driver license and a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be submitted prior to appointment. Applicants must possess a good driving record defined as not having the driving privilege suspended revoked or being placed on probation for cause involving the safe operation of a motor vehicle within the preceding three (3) years. Violations will be reviewed on an individual basis and may be cause for non-selection or disciplinary action if employed.
