Position Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides a variety of perioperative nursing services to patients and surgical teams. The LPN applies practical nursing knowledge critical thinking and sound judgment to support safe high-quality patient care before during and after surgical procedures. The LPN acts in accordance with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) standards of practice the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) guidelines and all applicable facility policies and procedures. The LPN possesses the education and clinical experience necessary to assist in preoperative preparation intraoperative procedures and postoperative care to ensure optimal patient outcomes patient safety and effective support of the surgical team throughout the perioperative process.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the OR for surgical procedures ensuring required instruments equipment and supplies are available and functioning.
- Assist with patient preparation identification positioning and application of safety measures.
- Verify surgical site procedure and required documentation according to facility policy and safety checklists.
- Function as a scrub nurse within LPN scope of practice to support the surgical team.
- Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques at all times.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team passing instruments and supplies efficiently.
- Handle specimens appropriately following facility protocols.
- Accurately count sponges sharps and instruments according to policy.
- Monitor and maintain accurate documentation throughout the surgical procedure.
- Collaborate effectively with RNs Surgeons and Anesthesia personnel to promote patient safety and efficiency.
- Participate in patient transfer from the OR to PACU or appropriate recovery area ensuring continuity of care.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing and walking throughout the shift including moving between operating rooms recovery areas and other hospital spaces.
- Frequent bending reaching stooping and kneeling to clean floors equipment and low surfaces.
- Ability to lift push and pull up to 25 lbs (e.g. moving cleaning equipment linen bags or waste bins).
Qualifications
- Current registration and good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
- Completion of an accredited Operating Room (Perioperative) Nursing course or equivalent recognized by CLPNA.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (ACLS an asset).
- Minimum 12 years of recent OR experience preferred; experience in a surgical centre or acute care setting is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of aseptic techniques infection prevention and surgical instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent organizational communication and critical thinking skills.
