Description of Work

Position numbers and will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for these positions.

Position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the North Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn NC. This position will report to the Franklin County Maintenance office but will perform work in Wake County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include but not limited to installation of traffic & erosion control devices clearing of right of way roadway grading machining unpaved roads pavement repair pipe installation or other drainage tasks inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up snow and ice removal and other emergencies as they occur. Employee will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer excavator backhoe skid steer tandem dump truck front end loader tractor trailer motor grader roller and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Employee will be subject to emergency call back and scheduled nightwork during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have the ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $34270 - $59973

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and experience in installation of traffic control
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front end loader forklift force feed loader asphalt distributor crack sealing machine track excavator skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to legally operate a Class A motor vehicle with N endorsement and/or perform flagging operations to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective written and oral communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; ability to climb bend traverse steep and uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights weekends and holidays. Safety-toe shoes are required.

Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Drivers License with N endorsement on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations(Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
