Purpose/Description
The Plumber in Roads Maintenance Division performs skilled work in installing maintaining and repairing plumbing systems fixtures and equipment. The Plumber will assemble install or repair pipes fittings or fixtures of heating water or drainage systems according to specifications or plumbing codes in Buildings and facilities within Roads Maintenance Division. The Plumber usually works independently following accepted trade practices and may be required to do occasional steam fitting.
- Required Knowledge
- Mechanical-Knowledge of machines and tools including their designs uses repair and maintenance.
- Building and Construction-Knowledge of materials methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses buildings or other structures such as highways and roads.
- Design-Knowledge of design techniques tools and principals involved in production of precision technical plans blueprints drawings and models.
- Customer and Personal Service-Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Required Tasks
- Maintain plumbing fixtures in offices and yards.
- Maintain water lines.
- Maintain drains.
- Maintain boilers.
- Keep records.
- Other Duties include:
- Maintain or repair plumbing by replacing defective washers replacing or mending broken pipes or opening clogged drains.
- Measure cut thread or bend pipe to required angle using hand or power tools or machines such as pipe cutters pipe-threading machines or pipe-bending machines.
- Maintain hoses and fill stations.
- Install pipe assemblies fittings fixtures valves appliances such as dishwashers or water heaters or fixtures such as sinks or toilets using hand or power tools.
- Review blueprints building codes or specifications to determine work details or procedures.
- Install underground storm sanitary or water piping systems extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing.
- Install green plumbing equipment such as faucet flow restrictors dual-flush or pressure-assisted flush toilets or tankless hot water heaters.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Apprenticeship in skilled trades as a plumber.
- Valid state of Michigan Plumber Journeyperson license
- Backflow prevention license or obtain within six months of employment. Extension may be given at the discretion of management.
- Experience Requirements
- Five years as a full-time paid licensed Plumber
- Valid state of Michigan Drivers license with a safe and acceptable driving record (no more than 7 points)
