Holyoke Public Schools is a PreK-12 public school district serving nearly 4800 students of whom 80 percent are Latino/Latina in 11 schools. • A comprehensive approach to early literacy that includes strong core instruction and one-on-one tutoring contributing to more students reading at grade level
• A thriving dual language English/Spanish program where nearly 900 students are on their path to becoming bilingual biliterate and bicultural

• More than one-third of Holyoke teachers identify as people of color a 19-point increase over 10 years. Many partnership programs support staff to earn licensure or additional certification.

Job Title: Career and Technical Education Assistant - Culinary Arts

Reports To: Career and Technical Education Director

Responsibilities:

• Assist the culinary instructors in teaching the Massachusetts Culinary Frameworks adapting to different learning styles and student backgrounds.
• Support the development of occupational skills and knowledge to help students become competent in the culinary field.
• Aid in the preparation instruction shop work and clean-up activities within the allotted class time.
• Maintain accurate records of student grades attendance and discipline.
• Demonstrate the use of occupational materials equipment and processes using standard models mock-ups sketches and other instructional aides.
• Guide students in selecting and performing appropriate activities to attain required competencies.
• Provide individual and group assistance tailored to the needs of the students and the requirements of the activities being performed.
• Mentor students on the importance of postsecondary education training and a strong work ethic.
• Collaborate with the CTE Director and Co-op coordinator to ensure students have work-based experiences including co-ops.
• Instruct students on appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation and use of instruments and equipment.
• Assist in controlling the storage maintenance and use of materials and property to prevent loss or abuse.
• Help establish and maintain standards of student conduct to provide an orderly safe and productive environment.
• Communicate with employers parents and school counselors regarding individual student progress.
• Assist in evaluating student performance knowledge and skills in the course and prepare progress reports.

Operational Support:

• Assist in the daily operation of the student-run restaurant ensuring smooth workflow and quality service.
• Make supply runs as needed to maintain adequate inventory for classroom and restaurant needs.
• Support the planning and execution of special events collaborating with culinary instructors and other staff.

Professional Development:

• This position could be a stepping stone towards becoming a licensed Chapter 74 Culinary Instructor for individuals with industry experience. We will assist in working towards licensure.
• Provides an opportunity to transition from the industry to a teaching role with potential career growth in education.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Relevant experience in the culinary arts field preferably in an educational or instructional setting.
• Current certification in food sanitation preferred.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills.
• Experience in an urban setting preferred.
