Job Summary

Must be currently enrolled in College University or Tech School or can be in graduate school working on a library degree at the time of application. Undergraduate applicants need to be at least entering junior year or have completed at least 60 hours. If an applicant is enrolled in a Tech School (2-year program) the credit minimum is 30 credits hours. Related majors include but are not limited to library science library media services informatics/information science.

Must have demonstrated an interest in library work as a career.

MDT Internship Program provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of problem solving innovation and teamwork. Interns engage in Montanas transportation projects that have a direct impact on Montanas traveling public! Interns will collaborate with area experts and gain invaluable hands-on experience. Our internships focus on training and integrating the interns into our current workforce of over 2000 people across Montana who are all providing a vital role to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.

Recruiting for one Library Intern to be be hired from this posting; interns will work in the Research Section in Helena MT.

The intern will be responsible for assisting with literature searches helping to clean up the library catalog system copying and creating records to add to our system assisting with the management of our interlibrary loan program contributing to the Summer Research Newsletter making sure MDT research products are widely available online and assisting with daily library operations.

There may be additional intern-initiated projects depending on the library-related interests of the intern. Daily work activities include: copy cataloging of print materials; enhancing catalog records with tables of contents and summaries; shelf-reading; checking the collection for mis-shelved items; working on research guides; identifying useful resources that may be relevant for MDT Library patrons; assisting with finding literature needed by MDT employees.

Competencies: Knowledge and skills required for this position include strong attention to detail organization skills good communication teamwork skills and computer skills.

Interns do not receive benefits such as paid holidays medical coverage earned vacation or sick leave.

Work schedule will be 40 hours a week during the summer.

Pay is determined by credit hours earned by the end of Spring semester 2026:: credit hours $19.50

60-90 credit hours $21.46

91 credit hours $22.25

Technical Schools:

Minimum of 30 credit hours $22.25
