Job Summary

  • Bachelors Degree or diploma in Nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • Current Standard First Aid CPR/AED certification

Assets:

  • Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing (OHN) from a nationally recognized post-secondary institution
  • Accreditation with the Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals or the Canadian Nursing Association in Occupational Health Nursing is preferred
  • Preference to candidates with 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in an area of occupational health services with emphasis on program development and management
  • Experience with Infection Prevention Control

Skills required for success:

  • Expert technical knowledge in one or more health related disciplines (i.e occupational health health promotion data analysis and nursing)
  • Expert knowledge of health and safety legislation and regulations as well as standard industry practices
  • Strong understanding of program development and program evaluation methodologies
  • Ability to problem solve and transfer conceptual information into real life application
  • Good working knowledge of general management practices including budgeting resource allocation contract management customer service organizational behaviour and shared services model
  • Ability to maintain strong collaborative working relationships and influence decision making in a supportive and constructive manner while being able to work independently and as part of a team
  • General knowledge of occupational health hygiene and safety best practices and standard industry practices
  • Excellent organizational time management project management decision-making problem-solving and prioritization skills
  • Ability to demonstrate patience understanding and a caring attitude
  • Strong conceptual strategic and visionary skills are essential
  • Excellent computer (including using health data management software) report writing and data management skills
  • Understanding and experience with audiometry and spirometry
  • Experience working in a unionized environment

Work Environment:

The work environment will be a professional office setting with an emphasis on collaboration within the Workforce Safety and Employee Health Branch. The role requires both internal and external consultation project management and program oversight demanding adaptability and strong interpersonal skills.

  • 40 hours per week Monday - Friday; overtime work may be required. This position may be eligible for the Hybrid Work Program

High Level Overview of the position:

The City of Edmonton invites applications for a dedicated Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) within our Workforce Safety and Employee Health branch.

In this specialized role the successful candidate will function as a registered nursing professional focused on protecting and promoting worker health. This includes developing City-wide health initiatives and preventing injury illness and disability. Reporting to the Health Services Manager while working alongside the various business areas this position provides expert consultation and specialized services integrating health and safety controls along with wellness initiatives directly into our organizational culture and work environment.

What will you do

As an OHN you will work within an integrated business model collaborating with partners such as Disability Management and Occupational Health and Safety Services (OHSS). You will ensure the City remains compliant with the Alberta OHS Code and the Health Information Act while applying industry best practices to protect our workforce.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Program Management: Collaborating with key business area partners the OHN is responsible for developing enacting and overseeing comprehensive corporate occupational health initiatives
    • Plan develop implement evaluate and maintain comprehensive workforce occupational health programs including health promotion injury and illness prevention infection prevention control and health surveillance

    • Focus on the prevention or early detection of illness and injury as the primary outcome of all occupational health programs

    • Manage programs by setting corporate standards monitoring legislative changes for compliance with health surveillance requirements maintaining corporate equipment and researching best practices from industry relevant organizations other levels of government and community partners

    • Manage occupational health projects through the complete life cycle including identification of desired outcomes and end state sourcing and allocation of project resources change management implementation and outcome measurement and evaluation

    • Identify projects based on legislative requirements and emerging occupational health trends and hazards

  • Consultation & Expertise: The OHN is responsible for providing occupational health subject matter expertise to all levels of the corporation
    • Provide expert consultation and support to all levels and departments in the organization from front-line staff up to and including management on occupational health policy programs and issues

    • Provide external and internal consultation which may be in response to legislative requirements adoption of best management practice or a concern raised by employees or engagement participants

    • Work towards achieving integration within the Workforce Safety and Employee Health team on all aspects of occupational health policy program and issues as a Subject Matter Expert

    • Develop manage and/or administer internal occupational health training and/or presentations to business areas

  • Contract Management: The OHN is responsible for managing corporate-level contracts that pertain to occupational health
    • Manage and oversee occupational health and medical services contracted to external providers to ensure contractual obligations are performed in a timely and cost-effective manner

    • Resolve contract issues as the occupational health subject matter expert and the liaison between the business areas and the contractor

  • Safety Culture: The OHN is responsible for actively promoting and encouraging a culture of health and safety in the workplace
    • Collaborate on and support Occupational Hygiene Hazardous Materials and Disability Management deliverables such as program development and/or exposure control management as required

    • Demonstrate and promote safe behaviours by actively engaging employees in their work location and in their activities to discuss concerns and controls

    • Assist in promoting City health and safety campaigns to inform and engage employees in participation
