The Reading Specialist provides leadership in the implementation of research-based literacy practices within the school. Also serving as a Literacy Coach the Reading Specialist is considered as a literacy content expert and provides guidance on curriculum development that encourages student success.*
Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership in developing the Divisions literacy plan tailoring specifically to meet andexceed the schools vision and goals.
- Provides leadership and training in implementing literacy assessments and screeners; recordsand reports literacy assessment results; interprets assessment results to inform instruction.
- Provides leadership and service in the analyzing of literacy assessment data to design targetedinterventions based on students identified areas of need
- Designs and implements direct literacy services to students identified for intervention; overseesliteracy services provided by assigned paraeducator(s).
- Collaborates with classroom teachers and parents to create a Student Reading Plan for everystudent that includes progress monitoring data.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers ESOL teachers Special Education teachers instructionalcoaches and admin in interpreting data and designing instruction and interventions.
- Serves as a resource for teachers in implementing literacy instruction aligned with the Scienceof Reading through professional development presentations model lessons observation and feedback and/or co-planning.
- Maintains an inventory of all specialized materials and resources used for literacy support.
- Identifies and/or organizes opportunities to help families better support.

Education and Experience:
- Masters Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License
- Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board
- Five (5) years of recent and successful teaching experience ideally as an English Learning Arts (ELA) teacher.
