Position Summary:

Law student interns in the Fort Collins office perform a variety of duties depending on their experience level and the needs of office at the time of the internship. The work will primarily be in the areas of family law (divorce custody restraining orders) and housing (eviction prevention). The duties can include (1) client interviews and case investigation; (2) drafting of pleadings motions and notices in divorce custody protection order or housing actions; (3) legal research memoranda and briefs; and (4) direct representation at court hearings (if authorized to do so under Colorado Rule of Civil Procedure 205.7 Colorados Law Student Practice Act). Law student interns in the Fort Collins office also have the opportunity to participate in weekly staff meetings and attend client meetings court hearings and mediations.


Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year of law school
  • Strong commitment to legal issues affecting low-income survivors of domestic violence
  • Interest in direct client contact
  • Legal research and writing skills
  • Candidate should be confident and able to work both independently and as part of a team

Location:

The intern will work in the Fort Collins office.

Time commitment:

Part-time

Compensation:

The position is unpaid but is open to receiving other work study funds that are student generated. Students may apply for course credit through their Externship Program.
