Job Summary

Summary

The role of a Litigation Solicitor primarily focuses on criminal regulatory prosecutions with opportunities to engage in other litigation areas based on the candidates experience interests and workload. The position involves providing expert advice on criminal law policy governance and Council functions conducting litigation and representing the Council in court as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and advise Council committees sub-committees and panels as directed.
  • Offer legal advice to Council Members Officers and associated entities.
  • Implement Council decisions related to legal matters as assigned.
  • Conduct litigation and represent the Council in courts inquiries and hearings.
  • Prepare legal documents and undertake statutory or administrative tasks.
  • Address disputes and complaints.
  • Stay updated on legal developments and advise the Council accordingly.
  • Support senior staff and assist junior staff with legal issues.
  • Participate in promoting equality of opportunity and adhere to health and safety legislation.
  • Comply with the Councils Corporate Safeguarding Policy and support carbon emission reduction efforts.
  • Perform additional duties as required working from various locations as needed.

Requirements


  • Education & Training: Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a current practising certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience/Knowledge:
    • Experience in Criminal Litigation/Prosecutions within a local authority.
    • Practical knowledge of public law.
    • Post-admission experience in litigation at the required level.
    • Knowledge of local government waste prosecutions and illegal money lending.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Effective advocacy and excellent communication skills.
    • Strong drafting skills and ability to work within a professional team.
    • Competent IT skills.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Commitment to continuous service improvement and equality policies.
    • Ability to work under pressure and motivate others.
    • Sensitivity to political aspirations of members.
    • Willingness to undertake further training.
  • Special Circumstances:
    • Ability to travel to various locations.
    • Full valid driving license.



Required Skills:

Demonstrated understanding of equal opportunities and the diverse needs of individuals. Compliance with Council policies including safeguarding financial regulations and health and safety. Ability to work outside normal hours when required with appropriate compensation. Strong communication and engagement skills. Experience in legal practice particularly in local government law.
