The Budget and Accounting Analyst is a non-partisan position within the Legislative Services Divisions Financial Office. This role is responsible for supporting the development implementation monitoring and evaluation of the Montana Legislative Branchs biennial budget and related financial functions. The position performs complex professional accounting duties conducts financial analysis ensures compliance with state laws and policies and collaborates with legislative leaders and staff to provide accurate fiscal data and projections.
Key responsibilities include preparing budget reports reconciling accounts evaluating program expenditures supporting fiscal note development and advising on budgetary policy. The analyst may specialize in either budgeting or accounting functions but all incumbents are expected to work collaboratively across financial areas to ensure the fiscal integrity of the Branch.
Substantial knowledge of state budgeting and accounting systems including budget development and the legislative appropriations process.
Substantial knowledge of state Branch fiscal practices and procedures.
Substantial knowledge of accounting theory and principles.
General knowledge of payroll and personnel control systems.
General knowledge of the laws governing state accounting.
General knowledge of fiscal management practices

Typically acquired through a bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or a closely related field combined with at least 5 years of progressively responsible and relevant financial budget or accounting experience.
