Job Summary
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the maintenance and/or construction of Regional Detention Facilities and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4). Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work.
- Operate a variety of department equipment such as Tractor equipped with an Ejector Scraper and Laser/GPS Systems backhoe and front-end loader in the development of Regional Stormwater Detention Facilities (RDFs).
- Will use a variety of equipment to dig detention basin and may be required to remove trees and brush in the area.
- Will perform a wide range of tasks around trees and wires cleaning debris with backhoe
- Will perform demolition work if needed
- Ensures adherence to safety standards when operating equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Required to respond to emergency situations as necessary.
- Attend training sessions as required to maintain abreast of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements.
- Perform routine maintenance of assigned equipment and trucks.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- High School Diploma; or equivalent.
- One (1) to three (3) years.
- Applicant must have a current valid Class C Drivers license and be insurable (Class A or B Commercial Drivers License preferred)
- Applicant must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen at Citys expense.
- Must successfully complete Emergency Management and Incident Command
- Training within first three months upon hire.
- Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of safe and effective operation of equipment and machinery such as a tractor and ejector scraper; working knowledge of public works department operations.
Ability to read and interpret construction project plans pay careful attention to details perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of time. Ability to interact effectively with all other employees. Ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are taken to ensure employee safety.
Employee must have the ability to make good judgement when making decisions regarding their regular job duties and be able to have the following mental functions: reading simple math calculations and withstanding moderate amounts of stress.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires some agility and physical strength moving in about construction sites or over rough terrain must be able to remain stationary or moving about most of the work period. Frequently lifts moves positions up to 60 lbs.
Duties may involve a high degree of intense mental concentration together with hand and eye coordination and visual attention for long periods in performing activities such as operation or repair of a Class A vehicle or Class C hydraulic equipment.
Additional Information
Same as above but for major functional segment of the municipality. Consequences of errors missed deadlines or poor judgement could have a continuing adverse effect on municipal functions.
Well-defined or detailed rules instructions and procedures cover all aspects of work. Judgement involves choosing the appropriate practices procedures regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.
Works consists of the practical application of a variety of concepts practices and specialized techniques relating to a professional or technical field. Assignments typically involve evaluation and interpretation of factors conditions or unusual circumstances; inspecting testing or evaluating compliance with established standards or criteria; gathering analyzing and evaluating facts or data using specialized fact-finding techniques; or determining the methods to accomplish the work.
Clear detailed and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. Questionable situations are referred to the supervisor. The supervisor reviews the work in progress or upon completion.
Most interactions are with internal co-workers and require ordinary courtesy and tact. Employee interacts with co-workers to give and receive information regarding work. Contacts with the public takes place on an occasional basis.
Work Environment: The nature of duties may involve continuous presence exposure of unpleasant or irritating elements such as considerable noise odors chemical fumes dust smoke heat cold oil dirt or grease. Work is continually performed outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Work generally contains one or more constant elements of stress such as being on call for 24 hours or being under prolonged pressure during emergency situations. Mental stress is usually present in the form of being required to weigh completing and concurrent demands under deadline pressures.
Duties generally do not present occupational risk with only occasional exposure to risk or stress. Minor injury could occur however through employee failure to properly follow safety precautions or procedures. Examples of injury include minor bruises from falls minor cuts or burns or minor muscular strains from lifting or moving/transporting heave equipment or materials.
Has access to some confidential information obtained during performance or regular position responsibilities.
Workforce Dispersion: Employees work at the same location and the same work shift a few may be dispersed.
