The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission is recruiting

for a Fishery Analyst located in Juneau Alaska!


What you will be doing:

As a Fishery Analyst for the Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission (CFEC) you will conduct research statistical analysis and reporting essential to the implementation of the Alaska Limited Entry this role you will: develop and maintain SAS SQL R and Python programs; produce annual demographic economic and regional reports; analyze permit and fishery data; and support the Commission with regulatory economic and demographic analyses used statewide. You will work with one of the most complete commercial fisheries datasets in the world and contribute directly to data-driven policy and the sustainability of Alaskas commercial fisheries.

CFEC works to conserve and sustain the economic health of Alaskas commercial fisheries by permitting commercial fishers and when appropriate limiting the number of participants in certain fisheries. As a quasi-judicial agency CFEC issues permits manages vessel licensing and provides due-process hearings and appeals.

As CFECs Fishery Analyst you will be a key member of a small highly collaborative research team where:

  • You will apply analytical statistical and programming skills daily to answer complex questions involving fisheries participation demographics earnings and permit activity.

  • This position may require occasional travel within the state to meetings and conferences.


Who we are looking for:

We are seeking applicants with strong analytical skills programming ability and a deep interest in Alaskas commercial fisheries. The most competitive applicants will demonstrate:
  • Proficiency with SQL SAS R and/or Python including understanding of database structure querying and program development.
  • Ability to independently interpret complex written materials such as statutes regulations management plans and historical records and apply them to analytical tasks.
  • Strong statistical reasoning skills with the ability to perform univariate and multivariate analysis and to present trends clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to manage time and competing deadlines while maintaining a positive flexible attitude in response to shifting priorities.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships within CFEC and with external agencies such as ADF&G.
  • Ability to clearly explain analytical results demographic trends and statistical methods to people from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds including those who may disagree with CFEC practices or policy.

While no minimum requirements have been established for this position the following qualifications are strongly preferred:

Bachelors degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university including Economics Fisheries Science Statistics Computer Science Marine Policy Quantitative Sciences or Natural Resources.

At least 2 years of relevant work experience in a fisheries management research data analysis economics or analytics.
