Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as master electrician assistant technical director or other specialized technician for theatrical productions. Supervises and schedules technical crews and work calls for set and properties construction electrical preparations and load-ins rehearsals performances and strikes.
  • Reads understands and drafts theatrical ground plans construction drawings lighting plots and schedules. Performs multi-track recording and editing for sound projects.
  • Repairs and maintains theater spaces support areas equipment and inventory. Manages the technical activities during rehearsals and performances.
  • Supervises crews involved with set and property construction electrical systems and/or video and audio recording.
  • Trains students in the use of technical equipment and supervises their work in the theater. May instruct undergraduate students in theater-related courses.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelors degree in theater or a related field and one year of related experience OR a high school diploma or equivalent and five years of related experience.
  • A basic knowledge of computer technology. A valid drivers license and an insurable driving record.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Serves as assistant technical director or other specialized technician for theatrical productions. Instructs undergraduate students in theater-related courses and supervises/leads stagecraft labs. Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Build sets and execute various carpentry and welding projects.
  • Supervise and schedule crews and work calls during set/properties construction load-ins rehearsals performances and strikes.
  • Train students in the use of technical equipment in the theater and supervise students in laboratories for Stagecraft work calls technical rehearsals and in other production classes.
  • Serve as shop foreman repairing and maintaining theater spaces support areas equipment and inventory. Responsible for the execution of daily tasks for the upkeep of Theater Emory facilities.
  • Assist TD in maintaining set construction and materials budget lines for productions and shop supplies.
  • Assist the TD in teaching components of the Stagecraft course.
  • Locate and purchase incidental items as dictated by the needs of productions.
  • Assist TD in supervising professional theater technicians
  • Assist TD in hiring training and supervising student workers.
  • Oversee student and professional overhire crews in scenery.
  • Collaborating with the TD on ensuring the safety of students staff and performers.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Non-departmental activities such as performances by Dance and other University departments.
  • Supporting the Technical Director in mentoring of the student groups and supervise Theater Emorys technical support of student theater in terms of specific questions requests for assistance and borrowing of equipment and follow-up with student groups during the TDs busiest work schedule.
  • Representing the TD in their absence in emergency situations and whenever the TD is unable to be on-call for performances.
  • Occasional building maintenance (in conjunction with Production Manager).

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrate skills in theatrical carpentry MIG Welding theatrical rigging and pneumatics (preferred) and possess the skills necessary for the execution of set and property construction.
  • Ability to read understand and draft theatrical ground plans construction drawings and schedules.
  • Possesses expert knowledge of theatrical equipment and its repair and maintenance.
  • Interest and experience in the coordination of theater projects in non-traditional spaces and environments for both Theater Emory and student groups.
  • Drivers license required.
  • Ability to drive pickup truck and box truck.
  • Proficiency in computer technology: Email MS Office (Word Excel) and online file sharing.
  • Experience creating and maintaining inventory documents.
  • Autocad/Vectorworks experience a plus.
  • Must submit portfolio samples of work.

This position is Fully on campus with No remote work. There is a required two-month seasonal leave in the summer most likely in June/July but dates to be determined with Theater Emorys Technical Director on an annual basis.

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
