Your DAY-TO-DAY as AN Emergency SERVICES COUNSELOR
As an Emergency Services Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board you will be an essential part of our 24/7 response team dedicated to addressing psychiatric this multifaceted role you will conduct initial mental status assessments and provide short-term crisis intervention services ensuring individuals in urgent need receive timely and effective care. Your responsibilities will include facilitating temporary detention orders (TDO) and coordinating admissions to necessary treatment services. Additionally you may train less experienced counselors and offer specialized consultation in areas such as geriatrics or child and adolescent counseling.
Youll actively respond to crisis intervention calls implement stabilizing measures and maintain accurate client records while leading efforts to enhance service delivery. This position emphasizes assessment intervention and support allowing you to directly impact the lives of those facing psychiatric challenges in our community.

Candidates must possess a Masters Degree in a human services field which qualifies them for LPC or LCSW licensure in Virginia along with a minimum of one year of experience in psychiatric care emphasizing counseling and crisis intervention functions. Alternatively a Bachelors Degree in Human Services such as Social Work Psychology or Counseling is acceptable provided the candidate has one year of relevant experience. Successful candidates should be adept at performing pre-admission screening and have the ability to complete certification training modules within 30 days of hire. Registered applicants must also align with QMHP criteria as trainees or licensed professionals.
Strong communication empathy and problem-solving skills are vital equipping you to effectively assess and respond to individuals in crisis while maintaining a supportive and safety-focused environment.
Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
- Masters degree in counseling or social work field that fulfills the criteria for eligibility for professional licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- One (1) year of experience in a psychiatric care setting including counseling and crisis intervention functions
- Valid VA Drivers license.
