Description
The Head of R&D Brachy Solutions is responsible for the execution and delivery of the Brachy NPD roadmap including sustaining activities. The role ensures effective product creation and maintenance disciplined project execution strong people leadership aligned with business strategy and clinical needs in full compliance with applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
Responsibilities
Product Development & Lifecycle Management:
- Execute and deliver the agreed roadmap according to agreed timelines budget and scope.
- Own the timely delivery of NPD CoGS savings product upgrades and sustaining engineering activities in close collaboration with Product Management and SCM.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards regulations and QMS processes.
- Ensure effective application of design controls verification & validation and design transfer.
- Own the R&D budget ensure spending remains within budget provide a balanced split between innovation and sustaining engineering across product lines and manage capitalization costs and investments.
- Drive the technology roadmap with the Chief Engineer including a lean IP strategy research collaborations and securing R&D-related subsidies where appropriate.
Project & Portfolio Execution (PMO):
- Own the project management and PMO activities and provide insightful backward- and forward-looking resource overviews to plan and prioritize activities.
- Ensure projects and activities are properly planned resourced tracked and reported.
- Chair the Portfolio Steering Group (PSG) and ensure high-quality decision-ready input.
People Management & Leadership:
- Lead coach and develop highly-educated multidisciplinary R&D teams.
- Ensure clear roles responsibilities interfaces and efficient processes within Brachy R&D.
- Ensure ongoing alignment of competencies with organizational needs and lead strategic workforce planning including the selection and adoption of new working methods and tools such as AI.
- Set objectives and manage performance and professional development of direct reports.
- Ensure continuous improvement of performance and ways of working build a strong execution-focused quality driven engineering culture.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with Product Mgt. RA/QA Clinical SCM and Service.
- Ensure smooth handover to SCM and RA/QA and effective post-market R&D support.
Accountable for:
- The approved R&D budget including projects capitalization and research collaborations.
- Executing and delivering the agreed roadmap CoGS-savings and R&D product lifecycle activities.
- Predictable project execution in line with agreed scope timelines and budgets.
- Compliance of R&D deliverables with the applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
- Performance engagement development and eNPS of the Brachy R&D organization.
Authorities -
Authorized to:
- Approve execution plans priorities and resource allocation within the approved budgets.
- Approve R&D deliverables at defined (stage-gate) milestones.
- Decide on needed competencies and needed staff changes.
- Make operational decisions required to ensure timely and compliant delivery.
Relevant Knowledge skills and competEncies -
Formal Education:
- At least a Masters degree in Engineering or associated sciences (PhD preferred).
Experience & Knowledge:
- 10 years of proven experience leading highly educated multidisciplinary R&D teams of at least 20 people across HW and SW portfolios in a regulated industry preferably medical devices.
- Proven track record in executing projects in the SW and HW field.
- Extensive experience in software development including AI within a regulated industry.
- Experience in budgeting IP management R&D subsidies and scientific research collaborations.
- Strong understanding of R&D processes and modern software development technologies including AI.
- Knowledge of RA requirements and processes related to MDR/CE and FDA/510(k).
Personal Attributes Skills & Competencies:
- Strategic thinker with good leadership skills towards an R&D group (>50 staff).
- Skilled in inspiring motivating and coaching experienced engineers and SMEs to drive agile development practices continuous improvement and excellence across teams.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences in English and preferably also in Dutch.
- Good analytical problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Accurate result driven stress-resistant and able to deal with ambiguity.
- Mindset of collaboration and continuous improvement even when a topic is of less interest to you.
- Proactive attitude; self-starting in recognizing opportunities and realizing improvements.
