Seasonal Biological Field Technician

Colorado Parks and Wildlifes Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a seasonal biological field technician position based at our headquarters in Denver. Primary duties include biological field surveys for raptors invertebrates and bats in Colorados state parks. This 40 hour per week position is mostly field based (70%) performing biological surveys in state parks across the state of Colorado from our Denver office location. There is some office work (30%) performing data entry data management GIS and administrative tasks. This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of conservation biology public land management volunteer participatory science and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.

DUTIES:

Responsibilities primarily involve biological field surveys - supporting the raptor monitoring program through nest monitoring surveys and volunteer management in state parks across the state of Colorado as well as performing invertebrate surveys in state parks across the state and deploying bat recording devices in state parks along the front range. Duties also include data management QA/QC report writing GIS cartography and administrative and programmatic support tasks such as volunteer coordination and outreach. Work skills that are acquired through this work include tablet computer mapping in Colorados state parks using ESRI Field Maps Survery123 biological monitoring skills using bat recording analysis software volunteer management GIS analysis sensitive and rare species management production of training & education materials and administrative duties. Travel to state parks across the state of Colorado for up to a full week at a time is a primary component of the duties of this position. Vehicles and gas most camping gear and most field gear are provided. Per diem for meals is also provided.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:


Proficiency with raptor identification ESRI GIS products and a validColorado Drivers license is required for this position. Good organizational skills interpersonal skills written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with autonomy are also required. Applicants should have a background in ecology wildlife conservation biology natural resources GIS or other natural resource sciences; as well as be proficient with Microsoft Office 365 applications. Specific experience with Field Maps for ArcGIS and Survey123 is very helpful. Training in survey protocols and data entry will be provided.

An ideal candidate will have:

  1. Knowledge of Colorado wildlife (specifically nesting raptors) and vegetation as well as experience with wildlife and/or vegetation sampling techniques.
  2. Experience using ESRI Field Maps to collect biological data in an outdoor field setting.
  3. Raptor identification skills.
  4. Experience with Song Meter Bat unit deployment.
  5. Experience conducting invertebrate surveys out in the field.
  6. Experience working with volunteers.
  7. Experience with data entry and maintaining data.
  8. Strong work ethic and organizational skills and the ability to work in a professional setting both independently and on teams.
  9. Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely develop reports and present information both orally and in written format.
  10. Understanding of recreation natural resource and public land management principles and an understanding of how natural sciences relate to land management.
  11. Experience with or willingness to regularly perform overnight field work in state parks across Colorado in a variety of conditions.
  12. Passion for working outdoors and excitement for working for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Currently temporary employees of the state of Colorado are not eligible for health benefits but do accrue paid sick leave throughout their employment. Employees are eligible to contribute to a 401k program and the state PERA retirement fund.

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle

  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position

  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
