Job Summary

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Criticality Safety Engineer to work in our Criticality Safety Department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls Idaho facility with every other Friday off.

Apply nuclear physics ANSI/ANS-8 series industry standards unique computer codes and state-of-the-art neutron cross section data to derive administrative and engineered controls for the prevention of an inadvertent nuclear chain reaction. Interface with facility operations staff to develop criticality safety controls specific to the facility and operation. Determines safe parameters for safe handling processing and storage for the various forms of fissionable materials. This position is part of the INL Nuclear Nexus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform criticality safety reviews or assessments of existing and proposed facility safety bases engineering studies research plans facility procedures operating nuclear facilities proposed new facility designs and existing facility modifications.

  • Perform criticality safety evaluations that meet DOE-STD-3007 requirements.

  • Apply Conduct of Operations principles in assisting nuclear safety and operations in Safety Basis Implementation Reviews and in conducting training for operations personnel.

  • Perform independent checks of other engineers computer models and written criticality safety evaluations.

  • Collaborate with project managers operators nuclear safety and criticality safety officers in discussing progress input assumptions and proposed controls.

  • Perform software and hardware installation testing records and maintenance activities in accordance with the Software Quality Assurance plan.

  • May act as an organizational point of contact for multiple nuclear facilities on criticality safety issues particularly criticality safety dose calculations for operations engineering environmental safety and health and project personnel.

  • May perform duties as the System Administrator for the Criticality Safety computational cluster.

  • Perform software quality assurance activities to maintain software configuration management.

  • Support nuclear safety using DOE STD-3009 to create new or update existing Documented Safety Analyses (DSA).

  • Work with and/or lead team evaluations that support safe cost-effective and compliant solutions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering or other relevant engineering degree and (5) years of related experience or a Masters Degree in Nuclear Engineering or other relevant engineering degree and (2) years of related experience.

  • Must complete criticality safety engineer qualification upon hire.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred knowledge and skills:

  • Experience with MCNP or SCALE computer codes.

  • Experience with LINUX-based operating environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this classification the employee is frequently required to stand walk sit stoop kneel bend and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type handle materials manipulate tools and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is ($95256 - $195288).

  • At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education relevant experience and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
