The City of Lenexa is accepting applications for a paid Parks and Recreation Intern for summer 2026.
Hiring Timeline:
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are submitted. Applications will remain open until February 6th or until the position is filled.
Schedule:
- Parks and Recreation operates throughout Lenexa with varying schedules; the intern should anticipate some evening and weekend hours for events and programs.
- Work a consistent on-site schedule of 3540 hours per week as mutually agreed upon with the supervisor.
- Internship dates are flexible with an estimated duration from mid-May to mid-August.
Position Summary:
This internship provides hands-on experience in program development event coordination and daily recreation operations. The intern will support community events assist with recreation activities and complete a special project highlighting program or event management skills.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with recreation programs and events under the guidance of recreation managers and supervisors.
- Support the planning and execution of major city events including:
- The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle
- Community Days Parade
- Freedom Run
- Movie Nights and Farmers Market
- Gain experience working alongside staff in recreation operations.
- Contribute to summer camp activities including field trip supervision.
- Complete a special project demonstrating program or event management skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current college student with at least 30 credit hours in Parks and Recreation or a related field.
- Ability to work MondayFriday 8 a.m.5 p.m. with flexibility for evenings weekends and holidays as needed for events.
The rate of pay is $17.00 per hour.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
This role requires lifting and moving supplies standing for extended periods and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
