Background Check Information

Due to the nature of this position the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be
subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol
and drug testing.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs comprehensive maintenance and repairs on light medium and heavy equipment including gas
diesel compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of equivalent experience in a field closely related to these duties; up to one year of education
    may be substituted for experience.
  • A valid Drivers License issued by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire to operate a Salt Lake
    County vehicle.
  • Must possess a complete set of tools at the time of hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable
accommodation.


Journeyman level position works on a variety of equipment such as heavy construction equipment refuse
trucks vactors bucket trucks 10-wheeled dump trucks with snow plows 80 passenger buses street
sweepers landfill equipment may also be assigned to work on Emergency and Safety equipment such as
police cruiser ladder trucks mobile command centers generators and all light-duty equipment.


Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems; determines materials and parts required.


Repairs overhauls or replaces engines transmissions fuel injection pumps fuel injectors carburetors
alternators clutches brakes steering and suspension systems differentials hydraulic components
electrical computer fuel and cooling systems.


Diagnoses and repairs pulse-width modified hydraulic systems components pumps and electrical/air-over
hydraulic valves with GPS feedback controls.

Diagnose and repair drivability issues using laptop data-link computer software electrical circuits short
and open circuits modern serial data and multiplexing circuitry.


Installs and removes in-vehicle equipment such as programmable emergency communication radios
consoles data equipment laptop computers sirens and emergency lighting.


Tests inspects and certifies high-pressure compressed natural gas (CNG) on vehicle fueling systems.


Modifies fabricates and repairs using oxyacetylene plasma cutting and MIG/TIG welding equipment.


Tests electrical supply for proper and adequate wiring to meet power requirements; designs and installs
electrical power distribution systems.


Maintains a variety of records and reports including Utah State Inspections Salt Lake County Emissions
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Fleet Management Information System.


Drives vehicles in and out of shop bays for maintenance. May drive vehicles to road test and diagnose
issues.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)


Knowledge of:
Vehicle components hydraulic and electric systems and heavy equipment
Principles theories and practices of automotive repair and maintenance
SMAWA GAMW GTAW types of welding
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
Standards


Skills and Abilities to:
Read and comprehend vehicle diagnostic manuals
Read electrical and hydraulic schematics and flow charts
Clearly articulate cause and correction in written form
Determine parts and materials required for repairs
Cut material with carbon arc oxy fuel and plasma


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


This position requires extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time)lifting pushing pulling and
carrying objects over 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds with some assistance); regular kneeling
bending crawling standing climbing ladders and reaching up over and down. The work involves exposure to
grease dirt dust fumes chemicals smoke and/or loud noises as well as periodic exposure to extreme
weather conditions. Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces and at elevated levels. Employees may
be exposed to high volumes of traffic when performing road-call service work.
