POSITION TITLE:INTERPRETER
REPORTS TO:SPEECH PATHOLOGIST/CLASSROOM TEACHER
OVER-TIME STATUS:NON-EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 108
JOB SUMMARY:
Performs intermediate skilled work assisting teachers and students by interpreting through sign language tutoring and instructing students; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a classroom teacher and speech pathologist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Assisting teachers and students through sign language.
Interprets the needs and desires of the student(s) to the teachers other students and staff;
Assists the teacher in conveying specific knowledge expectations and requirements to the student(s);
Interprets academics announcements ITV film strips library services physical education all other information to students;
Discusses student needs with teacher parents and other staff;
Tutors students in areas of special needs;
Prepares instructional materials;
Supervises students during lunch and physical education periods;
Assists with conduct and discipline as required;
Assists students with all communications needs;
Attends workshops to develop and improve skills;
Performs other classroom duties as required;
Performs related tasks as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Thorough knowledge of sign language methods and procedures; general knowledge of classroom procedures and instruction program; ability to sign accurately and rapidly for extended periods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents and teachers.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally up to 10 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Moderate lifting and carrying required work requires stooping kneeling reaching standing walking lifting fingering feeling and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; good visual acuity is preferred for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions noise and hazards. Regular district-wide travel to multiple locations as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by training in signing and considerable experience as an interpreter. Applicant must be eligible to obtain a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level I or its equivalent as determined by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing upon hiring date.
