Job Summary

The Village of Buffalo Grove Engineering Section is seeking Engineering Interns for Summer 2026. Engineering is a part of the Buffalo Grove Public Works Department an organization regionally and nationally recognized for its excellence in providing essential services that enhance the quality of life for the community. Our team is dedicated to maintaining and improving the villages infrastructure including transportation water sewer and stormwater systems. As part of this elite team you will work alongside experienced professionals on leading-edge projects that positively impact the Buffalo Grove community.

This is pre-professional civil engineering work that is structured to provide candidates with a broad base of professional experience to prepare the employee for future professional work. This position will aid the Public Works and Engineering Staff in various aspects ofasset management infrastructure construction projects regulatory compliance and Engineering investigations.
The duties of the Engineering intern include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in GIS (geographic information system) build out information gathering or updating.
  • Assisting in OPENGOV/Cartegraph (asset management system) build out information gathering or updating.
  • Perform various field inspections and documentation of various permit related capital improvement and development projects.
  • Assist in field inspection and documentation of various infrastructure condition rating.
  • Act as liaison between engineer in charge of project residents contractor and other Public Works Departments.
  • Assist in design of field changes and identify constructability solutions.
  • Observe and document traffic control and erosion control issues.
  • Participate in vertical surveys.
  • Assist in preparing engineering technical reports and recommendations
Assignments are received in oral or written form and technical procedures to be followed are often not well defined but require initiative in determining solutions to problems and developing procedures to accomplish them.

Incumbents are expected to complete typical work assignments independently with supervision and guidance provided by Public Works professionals. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Village Engineer or other staff engineers who review work for technical proficiency and adherence to standard practices.

Qualified candidates should be working towards graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge abilities and skills:

  • Have completed a minimum of one or more years of college education in a Civil Engineering or Construction Management field;
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering;
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS a plus;
  • Knowledge of modern methods and techniques used in the design construction and inspection of public works projects;
  • Ability to interpret construction plans specifications and documents;
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Excel Word and Outlook;
  • Ability to work with a tablet and its applications;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to make engineering computations required by the work including but not limited to calculating construction quantities;
  • Ability to work as part of a team to complete tasks and projects;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors residents and other employees;
  • Write legibly and keep concise notes on work performed;
  • Follows safety policies and procedures especially in traffic and around construction work zones;
  • Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor;
  • Reports all accidents to supervisor immediately;
  • Must have a valid Drivers License.

Salary for Engineering Intern is $17 per hour dependent on qualifications. Typical work week is 40 hours M F 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
