Job Summary

Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of semiconductor innovation Join us to explore heterogeneous integration for next-generation chips with unprecedented energy efficiency.

Introduction

The convergence of different semiconductor technologies advanced materials and innovative packaging is opening new frontiers in chip design manufacturing and applications. Heterogeneous integrationcombining e.g. photonics electronics antennas and/or MEMS at wafer scaleenables breakthroughs in energy efficiency and bandwidth for next-generation systems based on chips. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and lead research in advanced integration technologies and their applications shaping the future of semiconductor miniaturization and high-performance systems.

Group

You will join the Photonic Integration (PhI) group a European leader in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and semiconductor process technologies. The group has a strong track record in indium phosphide (InP) integration wafer bonding and cleanroom-based manufacturing supported by TU/es state-of-the-art Nanolab clean room facility specializing in III-V processing and advanced materials. PhI collaborates extensively with other Electrical Engineering research groups and both the local and European high-tech ecosystem driving innovation in optical and wireless communications medical and environmental sensing imaging and advanced computing.

Job Description

As an Assistant Professor you will:

  • Develop research on wafer-scale integration architectures for 2.5D and 3D chips to enable heterogeneous systems with a link to integrated photonics.
  • Explore techniques for integrating various new and existing semiconductor technologies and/or materials with each other.
  • Investigate the integration of functional components for novel thermal optical electronic and mechanical properties at micro and nanoscale.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to architect new forms of integrated systems enabling miniaturization and cost reduction.
  • Contribute to TU/es educational mission by teaching MSc courses and developing new modules on More-than-Moore technologies.
  • Supervise PhD MSc and BSc students and integrate challenge-based learning into teaching.
  • Acquire research funding from national and European programs (e.g. NWO Horizon Europe ERC) and industry collaborations.

In this role you will contribute to the ambition of the Beethoven program to educate top talent and strengthen research across the fields of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate:

  • Holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering Applied Physics Materials Science or a closely related field.
  • Has expertise in one or more of the following:
    • Wafer-scale integration architectures and/or technologies for heterogeneous systems on chip.
    • Integration of various semiconductor technologies including photonics electronics and/or MEMS.
    • Design paradigms spanning combinations of semicon technologies such as III-V silicon memristor and nano-mechanics.
    • Functional (meta)materials for improved and useful properties at micro/nanoscale.
  • Demonstrates strong research potential and ability to operate in a multidisciplinary environment and to motivate researchers.
  • Shows affinity with teaching and will commit to obtain the University Teaching Qualification.
  • Has motivation to secure research funding and build collaborations with industry and academia.
  • Possesses excellent communication and organizational skills.
