Job Summary
The Evergreen State College seeks to hire a part-time adjunct botany faculty with a demonstrated passion for fieldwork and herbarium-based studies. The successful candidate would be comfortable teaching students how to use dichotomous keys and microscopes to identify unknown plants (including bryophytes) with an emphasis on flora of the Pacific Northwest. Botanists with experience and/or interests that include conservation biology restoration ecology and/or effects of global climate change on biodiversity are encouraged to apply. Field studies are an integral part of the teaching and would include a multi-day field trip to eastern Washington and fieldwork on Evergreens 1000-acre campus forests. Evergreen organizes its curriculum through interdisciplinary team-taught 16-credit programs (rather than through departments and courses) so the ideal candidate should show the potential for working across disciplines with faculty colleagues in a learning community. This half-time adjunct position starts in Spring 2026 and the course will be taught in-person using the Canvas learning management system- instructors would teach 2-3 days a week; modalities may include in-person lectures labs and field work. We seek an engaging teacher/scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and prior academic and/or professional experience in the field of botany. Our new colleague will be excited by the potential to teach collaboratively in teams and also able to work independently while maintaining high standards of professionalism punctuality and content relevance for diverse learners. The candidate may have the potential for renewing the adjunct contract for teaching in the 26-27 academic year during Fall Winter and/or Spring quarters. Evergreen is committed to building a diverse and broadly trained faculty. We encourage candidates with a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for teaching and learning in an interdisciplinary environment demonstrated experience pursuing innovative teaching strategies and experience working with diverse and underserved populations This is an adjunct faculty position and not eligible for continuing appointment.
