SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Public Health Bureau is seeking a dedicated and energetic full time Chronic Disease Prevention Specialist II - Bilingual (English/Spanish) (CDPS II) for the Postpone Program. Postpone is a comprehensive youth health program. The CDPS II will support the delivery of group-level interventions at youth serving organizations such as schools and juvenile detention centers focusing on sexual health education teen pregnancy prevention healthy relationships substance use prevention and overall youth wellbeing.

Using evidence-based program models the CDPS II will help educate youth on abstinence and contraception support healthy decision-making and promote positive relationship and lifestyle choices. The programs goal is to reduce adolescent birth rates substance use and sexually transmitted infections while enhancing overall wellbeing. The CDPS II will be responsible for activities such as conducting outreach to students parents and community partners delivering curriculum-based lessons to youth supporting social media education efforts providing referrals and resources to youth as needed assisting with program planning evaluation and reporting and maintaining accurate records and documentation.

The ideal candidate will have strong skills in group facilitation and youth engagement understand principles of health education and health promotion be comfortable teaching sensitive topics using anatomically correct terms communicate complex sexual health and substance use topics in age-appropriate inclusive and engaging ways use trauma-informed approaches when working with youth foster open respectful discussions around sexual health substance use and wellbeing.

Examples of Duties

Instructs clients on preventative measures and proper health care procedures.
Develops training aids and provides educational/training sessions to individuals and groups regarding the availability and specific services provided by health care programs.
Reviews publications for educational suitability maintains and distributes health education material prepares visual aids and display materials.
Assists in publicizing health care programs through media events.
Maintains epidemiological records of clients contacts and suspects.
Provides input to management during the planning development and implementation stages of chronic disease prevention and health promotion programs and provides administrative assistance during the administration and evaluation stages.
Assists in local and State health care studies and research projects.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge skills and abilities:

Working Knowledge of:

Principles and techniques used in health care and health promotion programs.
Principles and techniques used in developing training materials.

Some Knowledge of:
Group dynamics.

Skill and Ability to:
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted through the course of work including individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural groups.
Work under limited supervision in field settings.
Communicate clearly both orally and in writing; write clear and concise reports; speak effectively before groups.
Interview individuals and obtain comprehensive and accurate information in both office and field settings.

Examples of Experience/Education/Training

Any combination of training education and/or experience which provides the knowledge skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Education:
Completion of all course work for a four-year degree in Public or Business Administration social work health education behavioral science or closely related field

Experience:
Any combination of two years training education and experience which substantially demonstrates a working knowledge of the requirements for this position. The experience must have been obtained in a chronic disease prevention or health promotion program.

Additional Information

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
Possess and maintain a valid California Class C drivers license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
Be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings weekends holidays and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
Ability to speak read and write effectively in English and Spanish
