Job Description Summary
As a Mechanical Engineer for Critical Infrastructure Communications (CIC) at GE Grid Solutions you will be responsible for designing industry-leading solutions for industrial grade wired and wireless communications products. CIC is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer who is team-oriented can thrive in the critical path and has a demonstrated track record of bringing a broad range of products from concept to production.
A successful candidate will be able to work with the engineering team to identify critical mechanical requirements develop novel solutions to complex design challenges identify design trade-offs and see various aspects of the design through implementation in production. The successful candidate must also be capable of working collaboratively with peers across multiple geographic locations to effectively prioritize tasks and ensure that design goals are met. This role requires strong written and verbal communication skills to accurately convey complex solutions to audiences of varying technical expertise on a cross-functional team spanning multiple sites.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Lead multiple New Product Introductions (NPIs) by overseeing all mechanical design activities and taking part in technical business reviews to ensure overall success of the projects.
- Apply principles and techniques of mechanical engineering and drafting in the development of industrial grade communications products.
- Strategically coordinate the application of professional services contractors where necessary to achieve project milestones and ensure seamless exchange of IP.
- Interact directly and cultivate productive relationships with mechanical component vendors to ensure alignment with mechanical standards and process capability.
- Distill product requirements into technical requirements estimate scope of work and develop mechanical concept designs.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of mechanical design tools and leverage technical experience to overcome design challenges.
- Update existing mechanical CAD drawings in SolidWorks AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator.
- Create new mechanical specifications and drawings for die cast sheet metal and injection molded components.
- Complete Engineering Change Orders to release prototype and production documentation.
- Create PCB footprints and 3D models Altium.
- Maintain library of mechanical design artifacts in a controlled access repository.
- Demonstrate proficiency in ECAD tools sufficient to collaborate with engineering and subject matter experts.
- Document hardware assembly drawings to augment manufacturing work process instructions.
- Successfully prioritize and manage incoming tasks from multiple business divisions in different time zones utilizing Jira.
- Address design for manufacturability concerns as reported by manufacturing.
- Provide support and specifications to Manufacturing Engineering teams and contract manufacturers.
- Perform thermal characterization of finished assemblies in a laboratory environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Science or related field with a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience with mechanical design tools and drafting techniques.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience with manufacturing processes and production documentation.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience with the production of industrial communications equipment.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting multiple business divisions.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with 3D printing technology.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with DFT and DFM techniques.
- Must be willing to work out of Rochester NY.
Desired Characteristics:
- SolidWorks Certification preferred.
- AutoCAD Certification preferred.
- Ability to multi-task prioritize tasks and quickly adapt in a fast-paced engineering environment collocated with manufacturing.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Perform design tasks sufficient to modify existing die cast and sheet metal components.
- Familiarity with modern mechanical manufacturing techniques.
- Familiarity with ECAD tools including Altium Designer.
- Experience with manufacturing assembly.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaborate with a team to resolve technical issues.
- Experience with applicable regulatory markings sufficient to define component label placement.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools (ex. Windchill).
- Demonstrated ability to produce Mechanical assembly drawings and other relevant design documentation.
- Excellent organizational written communication and oral communication skills.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position the pay range for this position is between $80000.00 and $120000.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110% 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidates experience education and skill set.
Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
