Job Summary

Reports to: Head Nurseand Building Principal

School/Building: District Wide

Daily Rate of Pay: $180

Purpose

To enhance the educational process by maximizing the health and well-being physically intellectually socially and emotionally of school-aged children and adolescents enrolled in the Belgrade School District.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage school health services program in each assigned school.
  • Provides basic health care to students including basic first aid and emergency care for ill and injured student(s).
  • Evaluates ill students in accordance to district policies and procedures and makes parent contact as necessary.
  • Perform skilled nursing procedures including planning training monitoring and supervision of students under care.
  • Provides student instruction on nutrition hygiene grooming weight control health promotion first aid disease prevention substance abuse and related health concerns.
  • Maintains accurate health records for each student including immunizations mandated health screenings emergency contact information and medical history as reported by the parent and health care provider.
  • Administer medication following the district medication policy and physician orders
  • Accurately record office visits medication administration vision and hearing screenings and health related concerns.
  • Maintain accurate medication logs medication administration forms and medication disposal records.
  • Review health screening information and record information into the students health record.
  • Update immunization records and follow state immunization guidelines to ensure immunization compliance.
  • Conduct vision and hearing screening.
  • Interpret health findings for educational staff regarding the impact of health concerns on learning and accommodations required at school. Implement health education programs designed to promote student health and well-being.
  • Communicate educate and/or instruct school staff regarding information and interventions as outlined in individual health care plans.
  • Participate on Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams for students with health/sensory/physical concerns or impairments that may interfere with learning including providing special education related services (direct and/or indirect) in the area of health/physical when needed.
  • Manage the care of individual students with special health needs and/or mental health needs through assessment planning and evaluation; Make observations and assesses condition; implements health care plan for each student referred; counsels with student parents and/or teachers about health concerns.
  • Utilize and promote optimal communication between the family school physician and/or community agencies.
  • Performs routine health screenings for students; Conduct health reviews and school nurse health assessments (when necessary) on students being evaluated for special education or receiving special education services.
  • Keeps logs of visits and care given.
  • Ensures adequate and proper medical supplies are available.
  • Receive and carry out verbal or written orders from medical doctors.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents health associates and the general public.
  • Assist students and families in obtaining health care in the community by referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Conduct staff trainings on health related topics
  • Utilize the nursing process in response to referrals from schools to initiate a plan of action for resolving health problems.
  • Collaborate with community health agencies concerning health issues.
  • Participate in educational programs designed to increase knowledge and enhance the quality of nursing care.
  • Participate as a member of multi-disciplinary committees when requested by the Director of Special Education/Special Services or the Building Principal.
  • Orient provide training and document skills of school personnel providing health services to students.
  • Perform other duties/tasks consistent with the goals and objections of this position.

  • Thorough knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems and the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid.

  • Working knowledge of school systems.

  • Ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited university or college.
  2. Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the Montana Board of Nursing.
  3. Successful experience working as a nurse.
  4. Current CPR Certification for the Healthcare Professional.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Previous school health office experience.
