Job Summary

Position - Special Educator - Portsmouth High School (one-year-only - remainder of the 2025-2026 school year)JOB DESCRIPTION (SUMMARY): The special educator plans and provides individualized and specialized instruction that is an appropriate and rigorous learning experience for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The professional in this position is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction forward students with disabilities such that the students have opportunities to access the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aids accommodations an program modifications CERTIFICATE / LICENSE REQUIRED: Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) certification as special educator Highly Qualified (when applicable) ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: to the policies and related directives of the Portsmouth School Department opportunities for the integration of the curriculum of other disciplines 3. Promotes the attainment of the Districts Mission Vision and Strategic Plan 4. Displays strong and deep knowledge of the philosophical foundations and content of the curriculum 5. Applies current research-based best instructional practices and strategies to deliver specialized instruction 6. Adheres to special education policies completes relevant paperwork presents assessment data and attends and actively contributes to special education meetings 7. Plans and prepares lessons to optimize student learning 8. Promotes deep understanding of content by addressing unique learning styles adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students engaging students in rigorous learning experiences using effective questioning techniques and relating instruction to the students life and to prior and future learning. 9. Designs and implements Individual Educational Plans to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities and completes IEP progress reporting in a timely fashion 10. Reinforces strong student effort and excellent student work products. 11. Facilitates student learning through the use of various collaborative grouping structures that are appropriate to the instructional task. 12. Requires students to regularly engage in high-level activities including but not limited to application and analysis of information. 13. Administers and interprets various types of assessments. 14. Maintains accurate student records as a result of the monitoring of regular formative and summative assessment of curriculum attainment; adjusts instruction for individuals and groups of students. 15. Communicates regularly with students and parents regarding student academic behavioral and social emotional functioning; communicates immediately with both when there are concerns. 16. Considers student voice in establishing and enforcing effective and positive classroom rules and procedures designed to ensure safety and enhance learning. 17. Organizes all facets of the instructional delivery system so that all equipment and instructional tools are ready for use and ensures smooth transitions maximizes time on task and guarantees the efficient distribution of resources 18. Thorough knowledge of federal and state special education laws governing children with disabilities Integrates technology to more effectively deliver the curriculum and specially designed instruction 19. Communicates high and clear expectations 20. Assists students in monitoring their own progress and ownership of learning 21. Contributes to collaborative planning activities and collaborates regularly and professionally with colleagues students and parents regarding student academic behavioral and social emotional functioning 23. Takes responsibility for personal professional growth. 24. Participates in school events and in school and/or professional development 25. Supervises and assists with the evaluation of paraprofessionals Other Specialized Skills that may be required: 26. Certified or willing to be certified in Safety Care. 27. Expertise in the use of progress monitoring tools to track students progress and to guide instruction and services. 28. Familiarity with and ability to use a variety of adaptive technologies 29. Demonstrated ability and success in working collaboratively with large educational teams.30. Performs other duties as required. Communicate and detect information at levels to be able to make presentations and exchange information in person and on the telephone 2. Detect determine perceive and identify documentation and reports and to observe students 5. Able to meet multiple demands from several people and meet deadlines with severe time constraints 6. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time in both indoor and outdoor environments and possible move and traverse in order to maintain a safe learning environment 7. Stamina to work irregular or extended hours to include a full day and then attending meetings or supervising evening events 8. Work at a desk conference table small student classroom table or in meetings in various configurations 9. Position self to be able to retrieve items overhead above the shoulders and and transport moderately heavy objects Occasionally yet essential to this position the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and with other workers. The position may require the employee to work irregular or extended hours direct responsibility for the safety well-being or work output of other people and meet multiple demands from several people.
