A vacancy has arisen for a Wing Commander (Pilot Any) to serve as OC 19 (T) Wing at RAF Cranwell on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS) with an initial proposed start date of 22 June 2026 (or earlier/later subject to candidate status and position becoming available).
Although the JPAN located at RAFC Cranwell flexible working arrangements mean that the candidates location is negotiable and there is no requirement to be permanently based there.
6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell the school manages a broad range of flying tasks from Elementary Flying training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation.
OC 19(T) Wing is responsible to Comdt 6 FTS for the command of eight University Air Squadrons (UAS) and embedded Air Experience Flights located across Northern England Scotland and Northern Ireland. Whilst the post will require regular travel to the UAS locations and HQ 6 FTS the normal working location is subject to agreement between the post incumbent and Comdt 6 FTS. Responsibilities include the Command of the UAS indirect supervision of the flying tasks management of their personnel and output delivery.
The primary role of 6 FTS is to attract talent to regular and reserve RAF service and to educate selected undergraduates on the role of air power and a specified task of delivering 30% of initial entry cadre into Modular Initial Officer Training (MIOT). Whilst many applicants aspire to be pilots the greater challenge is to meet the need for engineers medical staff cyber intelligence and Air Operations personnel. Flying plays a vital part in attracting interest and is key to developing an understanding of the air environment but it is only one element of the overall educational offer. Force Development and Adventurous Training are influential in enthusing students towards a career in the RAF; flying attracts yet ground activities retain. 6 FTS is the UKs largest and most diverse military flying training school comprising 17 sqns located throughout the addition to delivery of flying training to UAS cadets it also delivers air experience flying as part of the continuum of influence to some 20000 air cadets on behalf of the RAF Air Cadet organisation (RAFAC); whilst also delivering formal flying training on various courses on behalf of DFT. The 6 FTS organisation comprises some 190 service and civilian personnel 245 contractors 1000 students and a further 300 Volunteer Reserve (Training) pilots who support the RAFAC flying task.

Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 0800to 1700 although these hours will vary to meet specific needs and may include weekend engagements at specific sites and overnight stops away from the designated work location.
