The Shaft Ventilation Engineer is responsible for managing and co-ordinating the overall Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene systems programmes and department as well as providing Operational Area Management with the specialist Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene services and expertise to ensure a safe and healthy work environment to minimize pure risk and litigation and adverse publicity. The work focus timeframe is 1 to 5 years but some plans may have a longer timeframe.
Roles and responsibilities include the following:
- Ensure compliance to Section 11 and 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Occupational Health Risk Assessment and Monitoring)
- Ensure compliance to the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene
- Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting.
- Advice to management on Operational Area Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene planning technical systems and administration.
- Establish and maintain technical standards.
- Establish and maintain management information systems.
- Emergency preparedness programmes are effective and in place.
- Advice on high level Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters.
- Participate motivate and lead in mining Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene technology studies.
- Provide solutions to specific Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters (known or identified via trend analysis)
- Forward scanning to anticipate future Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene trends and their potential impact.
- Determines the need for and develop ventilation and occupational hygiene policies procedures and standards in conjunction with Group SHE Specialists.
- Sets daily weekly and monthly ventilation and occupational hygiene standards and targets
- Effective risk assessment strategy and programme.
- Technical system audits and implementation of new innovations.
- Benchmark against acceptable international best practices and audit findings.
- Advice lead and conduct benchmark exercise internally and externally for the Operational Area.
This role is on a band 6/12 level reporting to the Chief Ventilation Engineer
Qualifications :
- Relevant tertiary qualification
- Elementary certificate in Mine Environmental Control.
- Chamber of Mines (COM) Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
Experience
- Qualified as Ventilation professional and occupational hygienist with five years post qualification experience in ventilation
Knowledge and Skills
- Competent as 5.1(1) 9.2(2) 16.1(1) (MHSA) and chapter 12.1 (MHSA) as Occupational Hygiene Practitioner
- Occupational Health legislation
- Management system formulation and implementation
- Hazard identification and risk assessment
- Extensive computer literacy in MS Office SAP
- Palladium and other specialized technical programs
