Summary

During the assigned shift the Clinical Care Supervisor has the responsibility for the clinical care of the patients at Mary Free Bed. Depending on the hours worked the Clinical Care Supervisor may also be the Most Senior Person/s at Mary Free Bed and are responsible for decision-making and communication within the hospital at that time.

In addition to the responsibilities within the assigned shift the Clinical Care Supervisor will provide input into the performance of the employees along with the Nursing Directors.

The Clinical Care Supervisor provides daily oversight of the clinical aspects of nursing care to assure that safe evidence-based patient care is provided to each patient served. Under the direction of the Nursing Directors the Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible for the implementation of a patient-focused team oriented culture working in collaboration with all other medical clinical and therapeutic disciplines to ensure optimal service and superior outcomes.

The Clinical Care Supervisor provides input & feedback on clinical decision making and best practice to the Nursing Directors and the Chief Nursing Officer. The Clinical Care Supervisor will conduct Nursing Huddles as participate on committees councils and work as requested by the Nursing Directors.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Quality Pillar of Excellence

Quality Nursing Care The Clinical Care Supervisors primary focus will be the delivery of quality nursing care. This includes working with all staff to assure that nursing care is delivered consistently according to established policies procedures and protocols including activities such as creating equitable staffing assignments mentoring new staff ensuring nursing presence at and preparedness for team conferences communication to and follow up with physicians safety monitors and timely follow up on occurrence reports as well as customer service recovery as needed.

  • The Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible for ensuring appropriate Plans of Care and individualized patient goals are established at the time of admission. Through audit activity the Clinical Care Supervisor will ensure the Plans of Care are updated appropriately and all education needs are met prior to discharge
  • The Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible to review and provide input to the Nursing Directors for nursing policies and procedures; nursing standards of patient care treatment and services; and standards of nursing practice. The Clinical Care Supervisor will be responsible for addressing non-compliance with policies procedures and validation of key nursing tactics.

Key Performance Indicators The Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible to understand performance measures within the Nursing Department and to collaborate with staff to identify opportunities for improvement and potential action plans. When process policy or procedure changes are developed by the Chief Nursing Office or Nursing Directors the Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible for directing staff to the information assist with implementation of the changes working with staff to complete competencies as needed and providing feedback to the Nursing Directors. Clinical Care Supervisor will participate in coaching under as requested by the Nursing Directors.

Quality Improvement The Clinical Care Supervisor will participate in the departments quality improvement program. The Clinical Care Supervisor will work with staff to provide excellent rehabilitation nursing care through innovative ideas that align with evidence-based policies and procedures.

Patient Safety The Clinical Care Supervisor plays an important role in providing a safe environment for all patients and staff. As a clinical resource for employees the Clinical Care Supervisor will evaluate the risks for each patient and as a patient advocate assure that appropriate steps are taken to protect the safety of each patient. The Clinical Care Supervisor will also serve as the primary clinical support for MFB employees throughout the hospital and responds to all Medical Emergencies calls per policy as well as all codes (Fire Tornado Violence Abductions) within

the MFB campus. The Clinical Care Supervisor will be responsible to redirect off hours Intrathecal Baclofen calls relaying information to the ITB nurses and or physicians.

Interdepartmental and Interdisciplinary Collaboration The Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible to maintain effective interpersonal communication and working relationships with MFB leaders staff physicians and other key stakeholders. As assigned the Clinical Care Supervisor will participate actively in interdisciplinary program meetings with the goal of evaluating and improving the care provided at Mary Free Bed.

Accreditation and Regulatory Responsibilities The Clinical Care Supervisor assists the Nursing Directors with implementing policies procedures and processes that align with Joint Commission CARF CMS and other state hospital standards. The Clinical Care Supervisor will serve as a resource for staff in these areas.

Service Pillar of Excellence

Patient and Customer Satisfaction Programs The Clinical Care Supervisor will assist the Nursing Directors with the implementation of the MFB Patient Satisfaction Program for the Nursing Department.

  • The Clinical Care Supervisor will conduct daily patient rounds addressing issues/concerns and performing customer service recovery. At the time of admission the Clinical Care Supervisor will welcome each patient/family and introduce their role. The Clinical Care Supervisor will also conduct daily staff rounds looking for opportunities to Manage Up and offer positive feedback.
  • Working with the Director of Nursing Services and Nursing Directors the Clinical Care Supervisor provides input into the development of appropriate action plans and with the implementation and feedback of said plans. The Nursing Directors are responsible for the evaluation of the action plans.

Customer Service The Clinical Care Supervisor is required to demonstrate EXCEPTIONAL customer service standards and behaviors while encouraging coaching and mentoring employees at the same. The Clinical Care Supervisor must deal discreetly and sensitively with confidential information and complete customer service recovery for patients and families members. The Clinical Care Supervisor is also responsible to maintain effective working relationships with staff and leaders from other departments and disciplines.

Physician Satisfaction Maintaining effective working relationships with admitting and consulting physicians at Mary Free Bed is an important responsibility of the Clinical Care Supervisor. Throughout each shift the Clinical Care Supervisor will be visible and available as a single point of contact for the physicians ensuring physician requests are heard and patient care issues/concerns are addressed in a timely manner.

Staff Selection Development and Mentoring The Clinical Care Supervisor represents a team and will assist Nursing Directors with new employee training and integration into the department of new employees. The Clinical Care Supervisor in collaboration with the Nurse Educators are responsible for providing feedback to the Nursing Directors for new employee performance evaluations. The Clinical Care Supervisor reports directly to the Nursing Directors as assigned.

Employee Competency The Clinical Care Supervisor is available to assist and encourage staff in the completion of required competencies. The Clinical Care Supervisor will be responsible for completing return demonstration with available staff throughout the shift thus ensuring each staff member can successfully demonstrate competence to perform job responsibilities. Competency requirements are established by the Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Directors according to regulatory and accreditation requirements and in alignment with recognized standards of care and best practice benchmarks.

Professional Work Environment Along with the Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Directors the Clinical Care Supervisor is responsible for encouraging a professional culture of personal accountability solution-seeking behavior mutual respect open communication willingness to change enthusiasm and pride. The Clinical Care Supervisor identifies risks to employee safety and report those findings to the Nursing Directors collaboratively taking appropriate steps to reduce those risks and maintain a physical work environment that reflects the high quality nursing services delivered at Mary Free Bed. The Clinical Care Supervisor will attend one staff meeting per month all Clinical Care Supervisor meetings and others as assigned. If unable to attend scheduled meetings the Clinical Care Supervisor will communicate directly with the Nursing Directors.

Customer Service Responsibilities

Essential Job Qualifications

Licensure Requirements: Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.

Education: ADN required BSN preferred.

Certifications required:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current ACLS and PALS certification. May obtain within six months of assuming the position.
  • CRRN required. Must sit for the examination at earliest point of qualification. If applicant currently meets the requirement to sit for the certification exam delays in doing so may result in the loss of position.

Experience:

  • Relevant clinical patient care experience: rehabilitation acute/critical care medical-surgical and oncology preferred.
  • Accurate decision-making strong clinical skills and judgment (managing IVs trachs wound care and troubleshooting equipment) and critical thinking.
  • Strong collaborative skills are required.
  • Time management and organizational skills are required
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Computer skills with specific emphasis on Microsoft Office software including Excel Word PowerPoint and Outlook are preferred at the time of hire. Proficiency with computerized documentation (Cerner) preferred but required upon completion of orientation.
